MY PERFECT SUNDAY

Sundays are sacred to me.

Owning my own bridal shop is incredibly demanding and time consuming. I adore what I do, but also cherish time off to unwind. And Sundays are those kinds of days for me.

I classify Sundays

as no-guilt nap days, when I can catch a little shuteye in the afternoon without feeling shamefaced about it. Naturally a girl’s got to get her weekly beauty rest.

On Sunday mornings

I sleep in until about 9am, then I go off to breakfast with my husband. I love to drive around and try new breakfast spots all over the city. Any new spots that pop up in popular areas like Melville and Bedfordview are a must-try for me and my hubby.

After breakfast

we’ll make our way to a cool foodie market somewhere in Joburg. I adore food markets, so if there are any new ones to sample, I’m there. But the tried-and-tested spots are great too — Arts On Main and The Sheds are two of my favourite marketplaces. They also serve authentic world foods, including Ethiopian and Greek cuisine. I love to deviate from my usual healthy eating routine on Sunday.

Speaking of which,

it wouldn’t be my perfect Sunday without my mom’s signature roast. Being Greek, we’re very family and food orientated. I love to see my loved ones and catch up over a nice big lazy lunch.

My absolute favourite dish

is my mom’s home-cooked leg of lamb and roasted potatoes. As far as entertainment goes, we are never left wanting in that department either. My husband is a classically trained pianist, so on some Sunday afternoons he’ll treat us to a recital over lunch. Otherwise smooth jazz is a great alternative.

To recover from my self-induced food coma,

I’ll catch up on my reading over the course of the afternoon. I’m currently reading Shoe Dog by Phil Knight. He is the founder of Nike, so it’s a really fantastic guide for me as far as my retail business goes. It’s my “dogooder” book to keep me informed about what’s going on with influencers in my industry.

Since I work six days a week,

Sundays are precious — my “metime” to relax and unwind and catch up on the normal guilty pleasures of life, like going to an art exhibition, or relaxing at a braai with friends. I make sure I have an event to look forward to on a Sunday so that I can kick off the next week in the right way.

I love visiting The Goodman Gallery and Keyes Art Mile.

The Mary Sibande exhibition was held earlier this month and I absolutely adored the show — she combines fashion and art in one glorious pairing.

To wrap up my ideal day,

my husband and I indulge in our weekly sushi binge. We have a hidden gem of a sushi spot in Kensington called Kakami that we love to frequent. It looks like a hole in the wall. You’ll think you’ll get food poisoning from this place for sure, but it’s absolutely amazing and they always do halfprice sushi on a Sunday.

We’ll end the day by ordering in

and chilling on the couch with our dogs, shooting the breeze and enjoying each other’s company before the demands of the working week steal us away from one another again. LS
