A new fashion platform for Mxo
DURBAN fashion designer Mxolisi Mkhize is counting down the days to South Africa Fashion Week.
He will be exhibiting his clothing for the first time as a brand and is the only Durban designer to showcase in the menswear collection at SA Fashion Week.
His fashion label, House of St Luke, is known in Durban and he is looking forward to having national exposure.
House of St Luke would debut 15 looks under the theme “Dawn” with colours grey and yellow.
“I’m really looking forward to SA Fashion Week because I’ll be showcasing my clothes for the first time as the House of St Luke. Last year I was part of Fashion Week but we showcased as a group. This opportunity means a lot to me. It’s a bigger platform to showcase my work,” said the designer, who is also known as “Mxo” in fashion circles.
“I have prepared 15 looks inspired by our current situation, from poverty to racism. I say there’s hope for a better life, which is why the theme is dawn. It means there is light – brighter days are coming… it gets dark before dawn,” he explained.
Mxo was assisted financially by the KZN Fashion Council to showcase at SA Fashion Week.
He said lack of financial support was the reason many designers were not able to showcase their work at prominent fashion shows.
“I’ll be showcasing on the last day of the menswear and I have to make sure that what I showcase is better than those ahead of me. To prepare a collection

costs a lot of money because you can’t showcase only one look. I can be a brilliant designer but if you lack financial support you are going nowhere. KZN and Durban are not lacking talent, but minimal support structures are a problem,” he said.
“We only have the Durban Fashion Fair and KZN Fashion Council who support us. We need more platforms to promote us,” he said.
His collection showcases on March 31 and closes the show.
