Easter tourists flock to Durban

-

MORE than 360 000 visitors were expected to visit the city for the Easter weekend.

It was estimated that the influx of tourists would generate R870 million in direct spend and inject an estimated R1.5 billion into the city’s economy.

ethekwini mayor Zandile Gumede said more than 3 100 job opportunities would be created.

“The hospitality and tourism sector plays a big role in injecting billions into the economy of the city. There are also a number of new tourism products on offer.

“This includes the Station Road Precinct and a number of new restaurants in and around the townships and along the beachfront promenade,” said Gumede.

According to a recent survey, Durban remained the South African city with the best quality of life for the third year in a row.

As of Thursday, the hotel occupancy rate was at an average of 80%. The rate was expected to increase until tomorrow.

Gumede said she was optimistic that the various marketing efforts to showcase the best Durban has to offer would yield positive results.

The new products would offer visitors a variety of choices in terms of places to visit and things to do.

“Having a wide range of activities on offer means people stay longer. This has a positive impact on the local economy with an increased spend from our visitors.

“Our message to those coming to Durban for the Easter break is to enjoy everything the city has to offer. Durban is the place to be this Easter,” Gumede said.

The city also has a number of major events lined up over the Easter weekend for residents and visitors to enjoy. Places to visit are:

The umhlanga Tourism Easter Festival at umhlanga Main Beach,

Explore The Gardens Easter Egg Trail at the Durban Botanical Garden,

Handel’s Messiah at the Playhouse at 3pm today.
