United Air settles
NEW YORK: United Airlines has reached a settlement for an undisclosed sum with the passenger who was dragged from a Chicago flight earlier this month.
David Dao, a 69-year-old Vietnamese-american doctor, was taken to hospital after Chicago aviation police dragged him from the plane on the flight from the city’s O’hare International Airport.
The settlement includes a provision that releases Republic Airways, which was contracted to operate the flight for United, and the Chicago police from all responsibility. – The Independent
Le Pen raises ire
PARIS: French presidential hopeful Emmanuel Macron’s party called for the resignation of Marine Le Pen’s father from the National Front (FN) yesterday after comments he made about a remembrance speech made by the partner of a policeman killed in an IS attack in Paris on April 20.
Jean-marie Le Pen, 88, the NF party’s founder, said in an internet interview: “The long speech he made in some way institutionalised homosexual marriage, exalted it in a public way, and that shocked me.”
Weather warning
GENEVA: El Niño weather conditions associated with droughts and flooding have a 50% to 60% probability of returning this year, the UN World Meteorological Organisation said on Friday, revising its view from two months ago.
The last El Niño began in 2015 and ended last year.

Latvia pas de deux
LONDON: Latvia has granted citizenship to ballet great Mikhail Baryshnikov, who left more than 50 years ago when the Baltic country was still under Soviet rule.
The 69-year-old Baryshnikov, born in Riga to Russian parents, will have two passports as he is also a US citizen. – Reuters
