HUNDREDS of impoverished women are set to benefit when international songstress Vidya Vox takes to the South African stage in September.

Vidya Vox is the stage name for Vidya Iyer, an Indiaborn American singer, who offers a new twist to modern media with mash-ups of Western and Indian music.

She’s setting social media abuzz with music videos that collectedly have over 200 million views and counting. Her most popular video on Youtube is the mash-up cover of Closer and Kabira, which has garnered over 43 million views.

Organisers Eventz4u, M2G Promotions and Zedkay Productions have promised that Vidya will deliver the dance party of the year when she brings her phenomenal pop music to Durban and Joburg.

The spokesperson for Eventz4u, Sudasha Pillay, said the concerts also had a hand in aiding local communities.

The organisers have partnered with the Phoenix Youth Centre, an NGO, to share a portion of profits to upgrade the centre’s women empowerment programme.

This was revealed at the concert launch party at Krakatoa in Sibaya Casino last week where sponsors, business owners, local celebrities and media representatives were treated to a taste of what’s to come with live entertainment, dinner and a message from the mockingbird highlighting her excitement to visit the country.

Vidya said: “I’m really pumped, my full band is coming so get ready to sing and dance and party the night away with me!”

Phoenix Youth Care Centre director Sharm Maharaj is urging the community, young and old, to support the concert.

He said, “We are running an Early Childhood Education programme for women to teach them how to run crèches from their homes so they can earn an income, and we want more young ladies from Phoenix, Kwamashu, Tongaat and surrounds to uplift their lives.”

Organisers say tickets are flying.
