Group will tackle big beach clean-up
WITH June being National Environment Month, Park Boulevard Centre will be hosting a beach clean-up campaign next Saturday in association with #Cleanbluelagoon, a dedicated group that cleans up and maintains the Blue Lagoon and all areas that need improvement in Durban.
#Cleanbluelagoon organiser Dale Johnson said Environment Month was able to personalise environmental issues and enable everyone to realise not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.
Every year participants, young and old, organise clean-up campaigns, art exhibits, tree-planting drives and recycling drives and different contests themed around caring for the planet. In Durban the #Cleanbluelagoon was formed after floods in July, and since then the dedicated group has been doing cleanups at least once a month.
Johnson said they were expecting more people since it coincided with Environment Month this time.
All schools, community groups, individuals and companies are welcome to get involved in the removal of litter from Blue Lagoon Beach, by volunteering their services from 9.30am until 11.30am.
A volunteer, Elizabeth Pretorius of Broll Property Group, encouraged more young people to be part of the initiative since the country was commemorating Youth Month.
“We need to continue removing unwanted waste.”
For those who would like to volunteer, the team will meet at the Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife Beachwood Mangroves Education Centre at 9.15am.
Johnson advised volunteers to wear closed shoes, a hat and bring their own refreshments. (Maps are posted on the #Cleanbluelagoon Facebook group).
The campaign starts with short briefings and safety caution measures.
