Deon’s epic Golf II GTI talks the torque

- ASHWEN SINGH

THE VW Golf II GTI, also known as the Jumbo, is no stranger to the Kwazulunatal street racing community.

The name may relate to either the model’s sizing up or Volkswagen’s use of an elephant, in early 1980s advertising, to communicate the increase in space.

Whatever the reason, for many petrol-heads owning any GTI is a rite of passage.

Deon Naidoo, 25, owns this week’s 1992 Jumbo Golf GTI 8V. Naidoo, an operations clerk at a local company, lives in Savannah Park, Chatsworth.

His Jumbo has a minimalist but effective upgrade to the factory-issue 1800cc power plant.

Performance was boosted with the installation of a performance chip, an FFZ gearbox, branch and performance 57mm free-flow exhaust system.

Naidoo chose to leave the capable suspension as is, but he did replace the factory-fitted ribcage mag wheels with a set of Phat 17-inch rims, mated to Sava 205/ 40/ 17 rubbers.

The interior features a “millennium spec” Polo dashboard, Polo front seats and a tilt-and-slide sunroof.

They say no Golf is complete without a killer sound system and this one boasts a JVC front loader, an Audiobank Pre-amp, a BL4040 mid-range amplifier and a Coustic monoblock. The amps and head unit are linked to a set of Kenwood 6x9s, four Sony mids, XTC tweeters and a Kenwood 12-inch subwoofer.

It was not disclosed how much was spent on this build.

Naidoo is a member of the popular VW Illest Owners Car Club, a collective which share their love and passion for all things VW, while seeing to the club’s philanthropic goals. SERVICE PROVIDERS: • Primaforce. • Rev Glo Auto Detailing. • Township Spares. • Sound Quest. • Webasto.
