We need to learn to appreciate things in life

-

EVERY day I used to marvel at the architectural genius of the Umgeni/ Reservoir Hills interchange and watch in amazement at the construction work being done.

Then my focus shifted to the Mount Edgecombe Interchange, with its complexity and long ramps weaving their way like monster anacondas, among which officials and engineers deliberate between mechanical cranes and vehicles.

This precinct is destined for great things, with the Cornubia housing estate and adjoining stateof-the-art mall. But, because we pass the area daily, as humans do, we fail to see the emerging beauty and magnitude of the project taking place.

We need to take note of what’s happening around us and show appreciation for the comforts of life. Only when we have loadshedding and water restrictions does it dawn upon us the importance of such services.

Perhaps George Carlin best sums up our societal traits: “We have big houses, but small families; more degrees but less common sense. We have advanced medicine but poor health; we have touched the moon but our neighbours are unknown; we have high IQS but less peace of mind; more knowledge but less wisdom; we have multiple affairs but no true love; more alcohol but less water; lots of humans but less humanity; costly watches but no time and high income but no peace of mind.” Kevin Govender Shallcross
