What’s stopping Stanley?

-

INSTEAD of wasting time and energy fighting for Jacob Zuma, in the very same way the EFF’S Julius Malema was prepared to die for him , why does my Phoenix brother, the ANC’S Stanley Moonsamy, not do something more concrete? How about fighting for more police to sort out the drug dens that operate openly and kill our kids of all races.

Is he unable or being stopped by the Guptas from using his position of “power”?

Or is he afraid of the drug dealers? ZAHIR DANBAR Phoenix THE letter from Narend Ganesh “SA needs electoral review” (Sunday Tribune, August 13), refers.

The core problem of our political system is that it lacks accountability. The cog that is missing is the voter, who is only recognised and wooed during elections and then forgotten.

Every official who holds public office or has any sway over people’s lives – be it a councillor, mayor, MP, premier or president – should do so by virtue of direct election by the people.

Parliamentary and presidential candidates should stand for election in their own right, voted into office on the strength of their agenda. When an MP leaves or dies, a by-election should be held to fill the vacancy, rather than the present system where people come and go without even a scant referral to the electorate.

If an accountable electoral system were in place, President Jacob Zuma would have been removed from power long ago.

The present system gives too much power to party leaders at the expense of the electorate and is therefore inherently undemocratic.
