Sad day for cricket as popular coach dies of heart attack

-

THE Kwazulu-natal cricket fraternity is in mourning after news of the death of coach Kasavan Moodley.

The 42-year-old coach, of Clare Estate, died last week. He suffered a heart attack while umpiring a friendly game at the Chatsworth Oval.

Moodley, who was laid to rest last Saturday, was the assistant coach at the Reservoir Hills Cricket Hub.

He collapsed midway through the game after complaining of chest pains.

Despite efforts to have him treated at a nearby hospital, he died.

Head coach of the hub, Elvis Govender, said Moodley was a humble man who would be sorely missed.

“We saw him drop to the ground, clutching his chest,” he said. “We rushed to him and tried to get medical assistance, but it was too late.”

Moodley, a Cricket South Africa level one coach, had been working for the hub for the past two years and was recently employed by the KZN Cricket Union (KZNCU) fulltime.

“He was a passionate man who lived for the game,” Govender added. “He had a terrific relationship with the kids and parents.”

His wife, Roshnee, described him as a loving husband and adoring father to their son, Sohailen.

“His passing leaves a void in our lives,” she said. “He was the breadwinner and always tried to provide the best for his family.

“He was proud of us and always spoke of our son, who is a talented cricketer, with a sparkle in his eyes.”

The president of the KZNCU, Fa-eez Jaffer, offered his condolences on behalf of the mother body in the province.

“It is an incredibly sad day when you lose a person of Kas’s calibre,” Jaffer said.

“He has given so much of his time to the game of cricket and to the coaching of youngsters.”
