Family reunions rekindle a spirit of togetherness

A SPECIAL thank you to the Sunday Tribune Herald for providing coverage of the Poovalingam/ Pillay family reunion held in Chatsworth two weeks ago.

I find the trend in our community, in reviving reunions, very important. No community or family can exist without a sense of history.

This reignites the family spirit and highlights the need to rekindle this vibrant spirit of togetherness in our community.

Many families were destroyed by the Group Areas Act, but it did not destroy the spirit of togetherness.

Besides partying, roots are being re-established and lost friendships and family ties rekindled while reminiscing about the good old days.

Our community urgently needs this, for in today’s fast-paced society families don’t interact much and, as a result, in many instances our children don’t even know their families across a room, largely because we are too absorbed in the materialistic world.

Families need to relight the flame of kinship as in the past.

It was great to see relatives get together in their numbers, showing they had not forgotten their roots – it was heart-warming to note 375.

Well done and keep the spirit alive. Let’s hope this is a trend and we see many more reunions, as life is short.

To the organisers, your gratitude and love for others will not go unnoticed.

It has been said that “nothing on earth exceeds the love of one who has a big heart”.
