DURBAN BUSINESS WHIZZ ENJOYS BAKING HIS CAKE – AND EATING IT

-

DURBAN entrepreneur Njabulo Sithole used to hate cooking, but today his kitchen is his favourite place in the house.

He is now a passionate cook and makes a living out of baking.

Sithole is the owner of Bakers Creationz based in the rural area of Maphephetheni, close to Kwangcolosi to the west of Durban, near Hillcrest.

His bakery specialises in cakes, including customised celebratory cakes for parties, and muffins and snowballs for the retail market.

Bakers Creationz snowballs are available in selected Spar supermarkets in Durban.

“We are known for our delicious snowballs. However, we also take orders for those who want customised cakes for their weddings, baby showers and parties,” he said.

“I do everything – I still bake although I have staff . No matter how big the business may be, when you are doing something that you like, you never get tired and let people do it on your behalf”.

The business has three independent distributors responsible for delivering cakes to the stores.

The small business is in talks with another major supermarket retailer to supply snowballs by early next year.

“I am expecting that Bakers Creationz snowballs will be on their shelves at the beginning of 2018. Everything is done, we are just sorting out a few things which they require before we can distribute to their stores,” said Sithole.

Although business is booming, Sithole, 38, said he had no intention of moving his bakery to the city.

“I am based at Maphephetheni as part of uplifting my own community, I employ local people,” he said.

Sithole started baking while living in London between 2004 and 2008. He was in a communal house with roomies, and they shared cooking duties.

“I never used to cook before that – in fact I ate bread every day. However, when I shared a house with roommates, everyone was cooking and I was forced to do so.

“I learnt through TV shows and magazines. I eventually became the best cook in the house. I then started baking and they liked my cakes.

“Whenever I was back at home, I used to bake, and my family put me in charge of baking when we had traditional ceremonies. Neighbours and friends started begging me to bake for them and that’s how a business idea came about,” said Sithole.

He is a graduate in business management, and is planning to expand by making his products available in many retail stores.
