A colourful festival is planned for Durban’s beachfront, writes

THE Durban beachfront is set to be awash with bright colour, street carnival artists doing their routines and scores of dancers moving to the beat, when the Colour Splash Family Beach Festival cascades on the city next Sunday.

The rip-roaring event is organised by Iskcon (Internatio­nal Society for Krishna Consciousn­ess) in conjunctio­n with the ethekwini Municipali­ty, as part of the city’s Summer Kick-off Weekend.

The festival with the tagline “one spirit, many colours” is set to brighten up the city’s beachfront and bring together diverse cultures.

Local singers, musicians, dancers and dramatists have volunteere­d to bring to life the free family festival, which will take place at the North Beach amphitheat­re between 10am to 6pm.

A street carnival is planned along the Golden Mile and will start at

Mini Town at 10am and end at the amphitheat­re where popular singers Shekinah and Zakes Bantwini, and dancers Verushka Pather and Vusi Makhanya and others will dazzle the audience with their performanc­es.

Food and cultural clothing items will be available for purchase.

“The promenade will also be interspers­ed with street theatre, clowns on stilts and face-painting. Magicians will add to the carnival ambiance, and a separate beach stage on the Bay of Plenty will also be used as a venue for the colour fest,” said Anuradha Dasi, a spokespers­on for the event.
