OM – The Power of Chanting

At the beginning and end of a yoga class or meditation session, the Om mantra is chanted three times.

The vibrations of the mantra purifies not only the energy of the room but the energy of the chanters.

The sound vibrations resonate throughout the whole body, creating a calm and peaceful state of body and mind.

There are many ways to chant “Om” (Aum):

A. When chanted loudly, you feel the omnipotence of the Supreme.

B. When chanted softly, you feel the delight of the Supreme.

C. When you chant silently, you feel the peace of the Supreme.

Chanting out loud is the best of the three because the sound is able to vibrate throughout your entire body.

When one chants “Om” out loud, you touch and call forth the cosmic vibration of the supreme sound. When chanting out loud, the “M” sound should last at least three times as long as the “AU” sound.

Advantages and effects of Om (Omkar) chanting

Chanting the “Om” mantra for 5 minutes daily will help you to calm your mind.

The “Om” sound produces instant positive vibrations and takes the listener to a state of mental stillness. It also helps purify the atmosphere.

The proper chanting of “Om” is a high form of yoga, moving energy from the lower chakras of the body up to the highest chakra, or energy centre – the Sahasrara chakra at the crown of the head.

It cleanses the mind.

It controls emotions.

It improves concentration, memory and understanding.

It relaxes a person physically, mentally and emotionally.

It charges the surrounding atmosphere.

It is a form of mental exercise and a way to prevent depression.
