Too late for sorry, now Zille must face music
DA LEADER Mmusi Maimane has referred Western Cape Premier Helen Zille to the party’s federal legal commission for investigation, following a series of controversial tweets over colonialism.
Zille came under fire over her controversial remarks that colonialism had brought positive effects as well.
She quickly issued an unreserved apology but there were immediate calls for her head from the ANC and Cosatu, who called her a “colonial apologist”.
Maimane said the tweets might have violated the DA’S social media policy for public representatives and thus, had to be referred to the DA’S disciplinary committee.
Quick fix for social security payment debacle
THE Constitutional Court ruled the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and Cash Paymaster Services (CPS) were under a constitutional obligation to continue to pay social grants on April 1 until another entity is able to do so.
Further, CPS’S contract has been extended for 12 months, with the suspension of the invalidity of the contract extended to give Sassa time to appoint another company to distribute social grants.
CPS and Sassa will be closely monitored by the court and independent technical advisers during the 12 months as a bidding process for a new entity is completed.
There are 17 million South Africans who receive grants.
