ETHEKWINI mayor Zandile Gumede committed a faux pas this week when she decided to appoint someone other than her deputy, Fawzia Peer, acting mayor.
Some in the party argued it was a minor oversight, and that Gumede was well within her rights to do so.
Others, like Peer, battled to contain their embarrassment as the debate turned to semantics.
But, the real winner was the DA which seized the opportunity to score political points by exposing the divisions within the ANC and going further to remind the province that “Peer was from the other camp” – a reference to her past loyalty to former mayor James Nxumalo, who lost the highly contested
