Concourt saves the day for poor
SOUTH Africa owes a debt of gratitude to the independence of the judiciary in general and in particular to its esteemed Constitutional Court (Concourt).
I say this following the stern judgment handed down by the Concourt that has rescued the government, after its inept oversight of social grant payouts, from total disaster.
It has acted without fear or favour in the interests of millions of people who have no means to live other than social grants.
As a champion of the poor, I do not understand how the president could condone the behaviour of Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini, who has shown, through her inaction, that she has no regard for the poor.
I welcome the requirement of the Concourt that she report to it every three months.
Congratulations to the Black Sash, which brought the matter before the Concourt, and NGOS who joined it, such as Corruption Watch and Freedom Under Law.
