Stop suing us – MEC

KWAZULUNATAL Health MEC Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo has appealed to patients to stop suing the state, referring to lawyers who assisted victims of medical negligence as “unscrupulous”.

The department faces more than R240 million in suits and matters still in court are reported to be close to R10 billion.

He said a medical litigation unit, made up of health and medical practitioners, had been formed within the department to deal with medical claims.

It is believed the unit would deal with medical negligence claims internally, with the patients expected not to approach the courts.

King gets R58.8m

THE financial affairs of King Goodwill Zwelithini were again in the spotlight this week when Premier Willies Mchunu tabled his office’s budget at the Kwazulu-natal legislature.

The lack of direction of the Royal Household Trust and lack of accountability and state of the monarch’s farms have always caused problems between ANC and opposition party MPLS.

Mchunu lashed out at the Royal Household Trust and its failure to raise funds for the king.

Mchunu said the royal household would receive R58.8 million in 2017/18 financial year.

The king had received R48.8m in the previous year.
