Tyre repair shop danger to pedestrians

-

RESIDENTS of President Road in Chatsworth are demanding a tyre repair business find suitable parking for its customers to avoid obstruction on the busy road.

S & D Tyre is a registered business which has been in operation for more than five years. It operates between the houses and cars are parked on the pavement forcing pedestrians to walk in the road.

The business attends to about 20 cars per day.

Siva Naidoo, who raised the complaint, said it was confusing how the municipality granted permits to operate in such a small space.

He complained about the the traffic and noise caused by the compressor.

“There is a school next door and children have to walk on the road because the vehicles occupy the pavement.

“They open at 7am and close at 9pm.

“We need something to be done to resolve this before something happens.”

Roshan Ramabaran, a nearby resident, said they had engaged the owner of the business regarding the parking and obstruction.

He noted the business was helpful to residents, but the problem began when it became popular while the space was minimal.

“We approached the owner because he knows the inconvenience caused.

“It started small and there was no problem; sometimes I have a problem to come in or go out because the cars park in front of our gate.”

S and D Tyre manager Aston Samuer said residents’ complaints had been noted.

“We will put correct measures in place to ensure the residents in this road are not inconvenienced. We respect the business and people of this community. We will keep cars inside to keep the pavement free.”

City spokesperson Tozi Mthethwa said if the use is deemed to be illegal in terms of the Town Planning Scheme, then a Section 79 Notice will be served on the owner and operator.

She said all Durban residents could report illegal practices on 031 311 7097.
