Netball teams blitz their way to the top

WOODHURST Sporting made their 2017 intentions clear at last weekend’s Chatsworth Netball Union (CNU) Opening Tournament.

The club’s under-13 side went on to win their division, while their U15 outfit finished runners-up.

Sporting’s U13 team blitzed their way into the final as they went through the round-robin phase unbeaten. In a pulsating U13 final, Sporting beat Croftdene Sports convincingly 15-4.

Consistent shooting from Alvina Pillay and Peyton Venkadu proved a thorn in the side of Croftdene’s defence.

“In the ring, the passes and movement of the GA-GS (goal attack-goal shooter) was truly amazing and exciting to watch,” club boss Kelly Moonsamy said.

“Our midfield players and defenders also played like stars in working hard to get the ball to our attacking players.

“The great team spirit among the girls translated into strong performances on the court that helped them to victory on the day.”

Sporting’s U15 team was humbled 17-1 in a lopsided final against a clinical Lulu’s Lassies.

“Our team struggled against the very experience Lassies team, but they had their moments,” Moonsamy explained. “We are very proud of these girls.”

Sporting now shift their focus to the CNU league competition, which gets under way this weekend.

“Our girls are really looking forward to the league. Many of them will be playing competitive netball for the very first time,” Moonsamy added.

“We are the favourites in the U13 division after our comfortable win in the tournament.

“The team is more determined and will treat every game as important as the next one. All teams are committed to training and know this is the only way they can achieve results.”
