Ta need to prepare for retirement, says the developer spearheading Mount Edgecombe’s first retirement development in a decade.

Dave Cameron, the developerrepresentative for Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village, said of the first development in 10 years in greater umhlanga: “We are helping to plan better for retirement – rather be proactive than reactive. Although the village is only for those 55 or older, it’s great to invest in now to use later when you reach retirement,” said Cameron.

“There’s a perception that you can only plan for retirement when you reach that stage of life. This development will cater for all your needs at retirement. It is designed to accommodate the more mature,” he said.

The construction of the first phase of three has begun, consisting of one-, two- and threebedroom single-level sectional title units, as well as a limited number of free-standing homes, all of which are pet-friendly and epitomise luxury lifestyle living. Prices range from R2.53 million. The village is in a secure gated estate with a community care centre that will cost R100m to set up as the developers want to ensure it will meet a range of needs.

Cameron said the construction of the 24/7 care centre had always been a priority and it would be fully functional by the time residents moved into their homes.

The community care centre will include a hair salon, laundromat, restaurant, tennis courts and a swimming pool.

“We learned a lot doing research on retirement villages. There’s a huge demand for such developments, and we are delivering what the market needs.

“We had to make sure our planning included everything that would be needed by someone at the age of 55.

“The rooms are big enough to move around in. The kitchens have ovens you won’t need to bend when using,” said Cameron.

Cameron said that more than half the units made available for the first phase of construction had been sold. He estimated the entire project would be completed within five years.

A show unit will be rolled out by the end of this year, to reflect the quality finishes and high standard of workmanship people could expect to encounter throughout the estate.

By August of next year, Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village will be a reality.
