Decoda Ensemble give lively concerts for flood relief fund
THE Decoda Ensemble of Carnegie Hall perform at the Tatham Art Gallery in Pietermaritzburg at 3pm today to raise money for the gallery’s flood-relief fund.
The chamber music collective includes some of the brightest young classical musicians in the world and aims to bring moving musical experiences to communities around the globe through a series of concerts.
Whether performing for young children, health-care facility residents and employees, incarcerated individuals or traditional classical music lovers, Decoda engage audiences through lively performances, interactive concerts and enlightening discussions which aim to provoke creative insight into the music.
Their Music for Transformation initiative facilitates intensive creative song-writing projects for vulnerable and disenfranchised populations in the areas of criminal and social justice.
Empowering the voices of a frequently ignored community, the programme has been recognised by CNN, the Associated Press, the Washington Post, and Billboard Magazine.
In the past season, Decoda were invited by the Obama administration to perform on two occasions at the White House at events dedicated to the arts and criminal justice reform.
The concert in Pietermaritzburg, which has been facilitated by the Decoda Institute in South Africa, will feature: Mendelssohn’s scherzo from A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Ligeti’s Five Bagatelles for wind quintet; Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello; Gould’s Benny’s Gig for clarinet and double bass; Norman’s The Companion Guide to Rome, IV; Shaw’s Woodwind Quartet; Norman’s The Companion Guide to Rome, VII.; Schulhoff’s Divertissement for wind trio; Balliett’s This Horse Ain’t Beholden… for woodwind quartet; Prokofiev’s Quintet, Op. 39, III.; Lutoslawski’s Dance Preludes 195; and Brahms’ Serenade No. 1 in D Major, Op. 11.
