Kimeshan’s Golf is a sublime statement

- ASHWEN SINGH

THE VW Citi Golf is undoubtedly one of the most popular vehicles featured in this column.

The vehicle’s local market success is due in no small part to its seemingly timeless styling, highly scalable engineering and high level of aftermarket service and support.

Kimeshan Pillay is the 31-yearold owner of this week’s featured Volkswagen Citi Golf 1.4i.

Pillay, who works as an assistant catering manager for a local company, lives in the Durban suburb of Mayville.

His car has simple but effective mechanical upgrades such as a flowed throttle, a performance engine control unit (ECU) to optimise engine management, a performance branch and a 57mm front-to-back performance exhaust with a 76mm polished tailpipe. The suspension system was also upgraded with the installation of a Cobra coil-over performance suspension mated to Anthracite custom-painted 15-inch Velociti mag wheels paired to four Bridgestone MY01 195/ 50/ 15 rubbers.

The exterior flaunts the functional and aesthetic benefit of an HID lighting kit, Laminex headlights and smoked indicator lenses.

Aside from an improved instrumentation cluster, which resulted in the original instruments being replaced with the more recent Velociti specification version, the true star of this Citi’s interior is its sound system. It features a Gemsound Double DIN 7-inch DVD system, Pioneer Mids on all four doors, Star Sound dash-mounted tweeters and a set of Audiobank super tweeters mounted on the centre post.

The acoustic kit comprises a Targa 7-band preamp equaliser and a Starsound 3200 Monoblock running a single Calibra 15-inch subwoofer.

It was not disclosed how much was spent on this build. SERVICE PROVIDERS: • Killer Customz • Primaforce Exhausts • Speedshop • Autostyle • Racer’s Edge
