Ranaut’s video points accusing finger

- KARINDA JAGMOHAN

KANGANA Ranaut has again lashed out at sexism and nepotism in India’s film industry.

In a collaboration with Youtube channel All India Bakchod, Ranaut points an accusing finger at Bollywood directors who favour male actors, calling out industry role-players who objectify women to break the box-office.

Ranaut is currently promoting her new film, Simran, in which she plays the lead character, who is a housekeeper from India working in the US.

She has previously directed criticism at awardwinning director Karan Johar, claiming he was the “flagbearer of nepotism” after he promoted several actors related to Bollywood legends.

In the video, called The Bollywood Diva Song, Ranaut makes allegations against the industry, claiming filmmakers view her as weak and silly because she is a woman.

The video reveals a Bollywood director, playing a character similar to Johar, who is unable to identify Ranaut as the female lead and instead refers to her as “the love interest”.

In the song that follows, Ranaut firmly states that she will no longer be sidelined.

“My role needs to get better, the glass ceiling is about to shatter, but instead only my shorts are getting shorter,” she sings, in Hindi.

The video was met with equal praise and furore on social media, with Buzzfeed India applauding songwriters Manasvi Mohata, Anuya Jakatdar, Ayesha Nair and Supriya Joshi.

Moments after the video was released last week, Johar tweeted: “Dear talent… I wish you would stay away from overconfidence and delusion, they are constantly conspiring against you, don’t you see it?”
