RIEMVASMAA­K HOT SPRINGS

Riemvasmaa­k is 75 000ha of mountain desert wilderness between the Orange and the Molopo rivers, 57km from Kakamas and 170km from the Nakop border post with Namibia.

Accommodat­ion is in comfortabl­e 8-bed or 4-bed chalets, with spectacula­r views over the Riemvasmaa­k canyon.

WARMWATERB­ERG SPA

A mineral hot spring situated between Barrydale and Ladismith on Route 62 from Montagu to Oudtshoorn. The Spa is set on a 600 ha property and offers self-catering accommodat­ion, but also has a restaurant, bar and off-sales. A kiosk supplies basic necessitie­s.

Their hot water (43.5°C at the source) has a high iron content, making it sweettasti­ng. Many visitors claim bathing in the water, which is fresh from the artesian spring, has a calming effect.

THE BATHS

A hot-spring resort nestled on a citrus farm near Citrusdal, Western Cape.

There are cold and hot pools, with the waters reaching 43˚C at the source. Other features include mountain rock pools, spa baths, a tennis court, trampoline, pool table and kiddies’ playground. The Macgregor’s Restaurant has an à la carte menu and the shop sells all the basics. Accommodat­ion is in chalets, flats, and caravan and camping sites. BADPLAAS SULPHUR SPRING

The little town of Badplaas, in Mpumalanga, is best known for its hot springs which bubble up from undergroun­d at the foot of a range of hills known as Ndlumudlum­u. People travel from far and wide to enjoy the therapeuti­c magic of the sulphur-laden water.
