Turning unpolished stones into diamonds

- SOMAYA STOCKENSTROOM

GONE are the days where shining soccer stars become washed out hasbeens, with not a dime to their name.

Through the Yona Ke Yona soccer star search by Nedbank, three dazzlers now have a shot to reach all their life goals.

Aubrey Modiba, Ian Chikohwa and Jarred Meyer, winners from last year ’ s star search will reap the benefits of having what Nedbank coined a “Ring Of Steel ” around them.

Senior Manager: Brand Communication, Nkosinathi Msiza explains that they have chosen these three boys to prove that every soccer player that comes through this programme can achieve greatness.

He says they will each receive financial services to educate them how to use their money beyond the field, a nutritionist to make sure they eat right to play their best, an image consultant to make sure they always look good away from the pitch,, as well as mentors who will teach and advice them about the industry.

“We have seen too many talented people die paupers. In SA, many soccer players see stars when they are in the limelight. But when the game is over so is their life. As a bank we want to help people achieve their dreams. The Leo Messis and Wayne Rooneys of this world did not become successful by sheer talent. They have a back-up team who ensure they are successful in all areas of their life. We also work hand-in-hand with the teams that these boys play for with people they have on their side.”

Since its inception four years ago, the Nedbank Yona Ke Yona programme has unearthed numerous talented players and some receiving contracts with professional teams.
