RAPULANA Seiphemo told his alleged hijackers that he would rather crash and kill all three of them than give them his car and still be killed.
These chilling details are contained in a police statement deposed by the veteran actor who was involved in a deadly car crash on the N14 highway outside Diepsloot, north on Joburg, on Valentine s Day.
Seiphemo told police, who interviewed him from his hospital bed at the Milpark private hospital in Joburg, that two men jumped into his car while he was stationary at a robot.
He said one of the men pointed a gun at him and instructed him to drive along the N14 toward Mogale City.
Rapulana accelerated the speed and the suspect at the back shouted at him to stop as he was driving at a high speed and he told them that they would rather all die instead of them taking his car and killing him.
Rapulana says they started fighting for the steering wheel until he collided with another white car,” read the police statement.
Seiphemo could not be reached for comment.
Police spokesman Tsekiso Mofokeng said: Police have arrested a 26-year-old man on charges of attempted robbery with aggravated circumstances and he will appear at the Pretoria Magistrate s Court for formal bail hearing on Monday [tomorrow].
Mofokeng could not, however, respond to questions on whether Seiphemo was facing any charges emanating from the crash or if police have interviewed additional witnesses since the accident happened.
The family of two of the three people who died in the crash told Sunday World during an emotional interview days after the accident that they wanted the state to charge Seiphemo with murder and attempted murder.
Donovan van Zyl (24) and his brother-in-law Jerry Coertze (28), both from Mogale City on the West Rand, died after Seiphemo s Audi A4 smashed into them from behind on Valentine s Day night.
Van Zyl s brother Jody survived the accident.
Tebogo Makunyane (34), understood to be from Mamelodi, Tshwane, was one of the passengers in Seiphemo s car. He also died on impact.
The surviving passenger, Nathi Msiza (26), also from Mamelodi, will appear in court tomorrow.
