Shaun s film scores big

- SOMAYA STOCKENSTROOM Beginning The Generations: The Legacy Firetown

YOUNG and hungry to succeed as a filmmaker, Shaun Naidoo s very first film has made it to Cannes. The film titled

will be showing at the festival this month, from May 13 to May 24.

Starring the talented Tumisho Masha and actress, Letoya Makhene, the film tells the story about a mother struggling to come to terms with the loss of her child.

It explores the themes of life and loss and the possible questions we face around death.

We entered the film into the Cannes festival. A panel reviewed the film and we were selected to be part of the short film showcase. To say I m ecstatic is an understatement, says Naidoo.

He worked on the film as a producer alongside Masha and Brad Katzen, who also directed it.

As a first-time producer, he says he was inspired by the script.

I was very excited when I read the script because it was a simple story with universal themes. Our team prefers to focus on stories with strong characters and narratives and that do not rely on or fixate on South Africa s past, he says.

The 34-year-old from Phoenix in Durban, who will be celebrating his next birthday at the festival, says he has always wanted to be in the film business,

I started my career in television and thoroughly enjoyed my time doing that. As a fan of the movies, however, I definitely intended on trying my hand at making movies. This is just the beginning of much more to come from 33 Films,” he says.

When he is not working on making magical films, his day-to-day job is mostly in advertising commercials production.

I work closely with ad agency clients and produce TV commercials for their various brand clients.”

But since getting a taste of success at making films, he is starving for more. We have several film projects that we are working on. I can confirm one such project a feature film

. We have a completed script and will be using our time in Cannes to find finance partners for it,” says Naidoo.
