TWO men are due to appear in the Alexandria Magistrate’s Court today on charges of possession of counterfeit goods and marijuana after being arrested with several smartphones and dagga last week.

Police confiscated seven Samsung Galaxy smartphones and two iPhones with a total estimated value of R146640.

Stickers containing IMEI [International Mobile Equipment Identity] numbers, along with jewellery, including a watch, necklace and a ring, were also seized.

The men were also found with a small amount of dagga. Police also found and confiscated an undisclosed amount of money.

This was after police received information about people selling counterfeit cell phones in Alexandria.

On following up on the information received, constables Mfundo Jonas and Ndimphiwe Jikolo arrived at a foreign-owned shop where they met two men who were trying to sell cellular phones to a foreign national.

The police searched the suspects’ vehicle and came across more cellular phones. Preliminary investigations confirmed that the cellular phones were counterfeit as the IMEI numbers on the packaging did not correspond with the IMEI numbers of the phones.

The two suspects, aged 30 and 32, both from Pretoria, will appear for a formal bail application.
