“We are doing very well at national level,” said a proud South Africa team manager Pat Harris, who was not put off by the wave conditions. West Beach is famous for its wedge, giving surfers and bodyboarde­rs a unique ride.

“We are going to compete with Australia shortly, so these types of waves are a good test of our bodyboarde­rs’ ability and skills,” Harris said.

Two clubs: sixth Dennis McElwee. the Indian Ocean seemed more of a test of endurance for the spectators than the bodyboarde­rs as they easily took to the water and paddled out beyond the breakers and waited for the next big wave.

Harris also commented on the improvemen­t and growing interest among youth riders and reported that she is proud to see the growth in South African bodyboardi­ng.

Due to the bad sea conditions, there was not as much activity in the water as during previous competitio­ns but, once the right wave had been identified, the bodyboarde­rs grasped the opportunit­y with both hands (and fins) and gave some pretty impressive performanc­es.

After the event, the boardrider­s, their families and spectators met at the newly opened Pammo’s Beach Café for a weigh-and-pay steak evening, to enjoy a great meal, great company, and tales of the day’s events. Results: Pro: 1 Iain Campbell, 2 Codi Butterwort­h, 3 Rory Fellow Smith Debbie holed the only par three birdie of the day after being closest to the pin on Wimpy’s 11th. Jessica was closest on Top Carpet’s sixth and Margie Reid on Harcourts’ eighth. Ronel Hough was “nearest-for-two” on River Spa’s 13th. The competitio­n on July 26 will be another better-ball stableford this time sponsored by the Ocean Basket. Fresh Stop Port Alfred Mixed July 16: The wind chill factor and a dark, overcast morning made conditions quite stark on Saturday and only 20 players heeded the call for an early morning start for Fresh Stop’s weekly mixed stableford alliance. The field was drawn into five mixed gender four balls. Debbie Longhurst, Glynnis Renecle, Derek Sinclair and Mike Brown carded a match winning 92 points to take the morning’s honours. Lynn West, Barrie B Brady, Maureen and Donald McGarvie were runners up with 89 points. The going proved more difficult for Margie Reid, Terry Harris, Dee and Cecil Jones-Phillipson as they failed to get their game rolling and ended up bottom of the points list on 78. Fortunatel­y, energy drinks were provided by the sponsors to get their egos up and running again at the prize-giving ceremony. Barrie (sixth) and Glynn (11th) both sank two clubs. The best individual nett rounds were shot by Debbie (67) and Maureen (69). Eric Lindsay won the sponsor’s bottle of wine for being nearest the pin on the eighth. KGB Results Tuesday July 12: A quiet chilly early morning turned into a partly overcast windy day as a cold front came in from the west hitting the course around 9.30am. Eric Lindsay, George Lake and John Crandon all shot impressive nett 67s. Mike McNamara (68), Martin Lambrechts and Tom Tagg (69) would have all gone home happy with their personal efforts on the day. Two clubs were sunk by Eric Lindsay, David Groenewald (sixth) and Terry Harris (eighth). Friday July 15: There was an even earlier start than usual on Friday with all golfers having to tee off into the gloom before 7.15 am to avoid Murray and Roberts’ shotgun start at noon. Yet 28 players turned out to be divided into seven four balls in a two-to-count stableford competitio­n. Mick Rushmere, Jan Immelman, Sandy Fryer and Peter Longhurst carded 89 points to win the morning’s outing. They were just one shot to the fore of runners-up Bob Shaw, Mike Beaumont, Dale Wisener and Tom Tagg’s 88. Visitor Philip van der Byl, Tommy Meyer, Paul Fryer and Graham Findlay did not fare as well as they scored just 79 points condemning them to sharing the 19th hole with the dreaded Hamer en Sukkel trophy. There were no two-clubs. The best net scores were shot by Martin Lambrechts (68), Len Bohnen, Dale Wisener and Peter Longhurst (69).
