Kenton Bowling Club

IT WAS another busy week of bowling competitions in Kenton.

Fortunately, weather played along and we could finish all the games without rain interruptions.

Last Wednesday, we hosted our friends from Kowie Bowling Club in the bi-monthly Kenton-Kowie (men) and Bess Tweedie (ladies) competitions. The fact that, at the end of the day, both sides had scored equal points was an indication of how competitive all the games were.

Dark clouds threatened to spoil Supa Thursday (August 18). Six lonely souls braved the pending rain (which did not materialise) and had an enjoyable game of trips. Bill Bedford’s team beat Di Gruneberg’s team and walked off with the spoils.

The popular monthly Personal Trust Trips was held last Friday, in which 18 teams participated. Rob Croly’s team, with Brian Aldag leading and Don Young second, won the day. Terry Bowen’s team was rewarded with something sweet to take the bitterness out of being the team finishing furthest from the winners. Thanks to Keith and Estelle for organising the potatoes to go with the steaks supplied by Kenton Butchery.

To round off a week of winners, the Friday attendance draw (R600) was forfeited by Bertie Moorcroft for the second time in two weeks. Next week’s jackpot goes up to R700. We expect Bertie to attend hoping that “third time lucky” still holds true.

Rina Maree will host a markers’ workshop on Friday afternoon (August 26). This will be of particular benefit to novices who have never had the benefit of receiving formal instructions in the “art” of marking singles games. Of course, other players who feel that they will benefit from updating their skills are welcome to attend. Upcoming events: August 26 – Markers workshop at Kenton.

September 1 – Doris Ford at Kenton.

September 1 – Les Clarke at Port Alfred

Weekly duty roster: Tabs cashier – Don Young, Bar service – Rodney Austin, Keith Benson.

Birthdays: August 25 Kevin Bates, August 28 Lottie Brink and August 29 Willie Aab.

Kowie Bowling Club

Last Tuesday we played our internal Megabucks competition, with just three rinks as a result of weather conditions.

Bob Ford’s trip of Jackie Kriel and Linda May who beat Lee Botma’s team by 10 points +14, Bob just pipped Rob Owsley’s team who finished on 10 points +13 shot profit to take the runner-up position. Bob’s team took home the big bucks. On Wednesday, Kowie headed off to Kenton to play the men’s and ladies interclub competition and the day ended all square with the men winning two games each but with Kenton finishing with a +2 shot profit on us. The ladies were also all square winning one game each but again Kenton had the positive shot profit of 4 on us. Still two rounds of this competition to go and Kowie ladies need to win all the remaining games to share the competition, while the men could go either way, with Kowie up by six points at this stage.

Last Thursday we played our monthly Ocean Basket Competition and, again due to weather we had just enough players to make it a viable competition. Jacques Krige’s team of fours, Peter Ford, Basil Clarke and Bryan Burger beat Lee Botma’s team by 2/ +2 to take the runner-up spot, while Lucille Keyter’s team of Don Kelly, Dave Tyrell and Rob Turner were winners on the day with a score of 2/ +9. Both winner and runner-up received vouchers, compliments of Ocean Basket.

Saturday was a beautiful day and we had a very good turnout for the Courtyard competition. Dick Schuurman and his team of Peter Ford, Ron Smith and Flame Metter beat Rob Owsley’s team of fours 2 points +5 to win the competition and the vouchers.

The club Ladies’ Open Singles was completed this week with Delene Deenik the club champion and PeeWee Tomlinson the runner-up. The Men’s Senior Singles round robins have been completed this week and Section 1 was won by James Fox with Section 2 being won by Dick Schuurman, with the best shot profit in the section. The final of this competition was to be played on Tuesday this week.

Duties for the week August 29 – September 4: Members please check the notice board for duties. Bar duty – Stephen Minnaar and Michael van der Sandt.

Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet Club

The Eastern Areas (EA) ladies trips final was played last Sunday at our club.

Jane Armitage, Carol Grobbelaar and Adele Wood played Gwen Bartlett’s team from Albany club. The Albany side won by one shot on an extra end. What a lovely game of bowls. Both these teams will go through to Western Suburbs Club to take part in the EP trips play offs on the weekend of October 3 and 4.

We wish you girls good bowling.

The Personal Trust sponsored day was held on August 16 and first prize went to Noel Heale, Soran, Bones and David Townsend, second prize went to Trevor Frost and his team, third prize to Jane Armitage and her team and the friendship prize went to David Freeme and his team.

Two men’s teams took part in the Inggs Cup in Uitenhage last weekend – the A team of Trevor Frost, Dave Freeme Rod Wilson and John Hodges; and the B team of Noele Heale, Arlindo Benedito, Neil de Villiers and Phil Taylor. Good weather prevailed and this prestigious event was well-supported, as all the clubs within the EP are invited to send in teams.

This tournament began in 1960 and is held annually, with Port Alfred Bowls Club having only won once in all that time. The top provincial players take part, so the standard is very high. This year the tournament was sponsored by Barclay’s Whiskey.

Last Wednesday our entertainment committee organised a bingo evening with delicious soups to warm the cockles of the heart. A great evening was enjoyed by all. Thank you to Helen Cowie and Maureen Heale.

Our Ladies’ Classic is to be played on October 6 and 7 and visiting spectators are very welcome to come along and enjoy watching good bowls and see the fun. The ladies’ drawn pairs Round 2 was played last Wednesday and is being keenly contested. The finals of the men’s EA trips will be played tomorrow and Sunday at the Port Alfred club. Good bowling to you all.

Duties for the week September 30 – October 3: Tabs – Anne Kotze and Eddie Senar, Bar – Chris Armitage, Phil Taylor and Colette Reid, Ironing – Dave Lang.

Eastern Areas

Last Sunday the ladies from the Albany Bowls Club won the Eastern Areas ladies trips final by beating a team from Port Alfred in a very tightly-contested bowls match.

The Albany team consisting of skip Gwen Bartlett, second Marlene Jacobs and lead Marlene Mitchener had to play an extra end to secure the win, after the game was peeled after 18 ends. The Port Alfred team of skip Jane Armitage, second Carol Grobelaar and lead Adele Wood peeled the game in the 18th end by getting a three to have the scores level.

The teams then had to play a sudden death extra end to determine the winners. The Albany team held their nerve best and played good bowls to win the extra end and win the match.
