EarlyAct mural forms pathway of peace

- LOUISE KNOWLES

THE public pathway that cuts through Bushman’s River from Park Street, past the church, across River Road and down to the river, has received a fresh new look.

The idea for a mural was conceived by Stella Swanson of Kenton Rotary.

Members of EarlyAct at Kenton Primary School – 19 children – were asked to draw pictures of the river. These were placed side by side to create the design which was drawn onto the wall and painted by the children.

It took two-and-a-half months and 50 hours of painting after school.

Each panel of the wall includes a saying in Afrikaans, Xhosa or English.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence and peace therefore is not an act but a habit.” – Aristotle;

“Saamdroom, saamstap – Spore oppad na vrede.” – Antjie Krog;

“Uxolo malube sezintliziyweni (You must have peace in your heart)”.

Diversity is further reflected by different religious views. For example:

“My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.” – Dalai Llama

The children were asked to choose from a list of 40 sayings and they chose sayings which tended to have the theme of peace in them.

Diversity is true to the ethos of Rotary which has 1.8 million members worldwide.
