BOWLSBANTER ... what’s happening
Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet Club
THE Vroom Cup was played by the ladies between Kowie and Port Alfred, with each side winning one game.
The Port Alfred men played the Timm Cup against Kowie with a similar result, each winning two games. The weather was very challenging with a strong wind and reasonably cold conditions which upped the degree of difficulty of play.
The Ocean Basket-sponsored tournament was held on Tuesday September 13, and a good turnout promised some competitive bowls. This proved the case as a new format was introduced and great fun was had by all. The vouchers were won by Eddie Senar, Victor Wicks and Shar Coleman, the fun prizes were won by Anton Stromberg, Noeline Kirsten and Rod Wilson.
Two men’s teams from our club took part in the Whiteside Trophy competition that was held in Grahamstown last weekend. This event together with the Inggs Cup, run by EP is held annually and this year was the 91st year! Our boys turned up and played well and the final result found them in the middle of the standings.
I would like to once again thank all our sponsors for their support, and at this time especially Warwick Heny of Remax Port Alfred who was our main sponsor for our very successful Ladies’ Classic held on September 6 and 7.
Upcoming events: The Tommy and Rita Browne Trophy tournament will be played on October 1. The Doris Ford competition will be played at Port Alfred club on Wednesday September 28.
Duties for the week September 27 to October 1: Tabs – Sheila Penny and Anton Strombeck, Bar duty – Roger and Sue, Ironing – Peter Wansell.
Kenton Bowling Club
The normal relaxed week of tabs-in bowling was interrupted by the inclement weather and our members taking part in three sponsored competitions and one regional tournament.
Last Wednesday the popular Dias Insurance Consultants Trips was won by Rodney Austin’s team. Andrew Murray from Dias Insurance Consultants attended the prize-giving. The nine best monthly scores (out of a possible eleven) are accumulated throughout the year and the Jackpot winner is awarded the grand cash prize in November. Current standing is: 1st Addie Wolf on 115 points, second Rodney Austin on 111 points, third Brian Aldag on 109 points.
Last Thursday the strong winds must have blown the enthusiasm for bowls away. A disappointing field participated in the Seeffs Supa Thursday competition which was won by Bill Bedford and his team.
Friday’s sunny weather (albeit somewhat chilly) brought out 16 teams to participate in the monthly Personal Trust Trips. A novel occurrence was that Carl Vermeulen, Personal Trust’s local representative, entered a team for the first time. The competition was won by Bill Bedford and his team. The day was rounded off by the usual steak braai with meat supplied by Kenton Butchery. Dave West was responsible for the huge accompanying boiled potatoes. The usual Friday attendance draw was missed by John Homewood and next week’s jackpot now stands at R1 100.
Two of our teams braved the elements over the weekend to represent our club in the annual Whiteside Trophy in Grahamstown. The Saturday night saw eight bedraggled, wet and frozen players wind their way home after a day’s play which will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Fortunately, the weather improved on Sunday and the standard of bowls improved with it. Although we didn’t feature in the honour’s list, the two teams gave a good account of themselves. This week’s duties: Tabs room – Ken Nixon, Bar – the Crandons.
Birthdays: 26th Marlene Hendriksz, 27th Tony Wiener, 29th Tom Spence.
Next week’s events: 22nd President’s Chair Competition at Kowie Bowling Club.
Kowie Bowling Club
Last Tuesday we had a good turnout for the SUPERSPAR competition with five rinks playing.
The competition was won by James Fox’s trip of Michael Beaumont and Lawrence May in defeating Stan Richter’s team with a full house 10 points and plenty of shot profit. Runner-up was Bob Ford’s team of trips who defeated Michael van der Sandt’s team on 9 points. The rest of the games were very much closer affairs.
Last Wednesday we packed our bags and headed off to Port Alfred Club for our bi-monthly competition and it was a very even competition in blustery weather which favoured no one except maybe the home ground advantage. The men’s comp we won two and lost two which leaves us four points behind PA 18/22 points and we have the positive shot profit of seven. The ladies had the same result winning one and losing one but Port Alfred are so far ahead on points that we cannot catch them on 4/16 points with a positive shot profit.
The third Thursday of the month the sponsored Ocean Basket Competition was played in two sections, ladies and men. In the ladies’ section we have a budding new skip Jean Churchley with her team of Theresa Coetser and Lucia Nel defeated Sally Moffat’s team of trips 2/18 while Jackie Kriel was the runner-up in the ladies.
In the men’s section it was a battle at the top. We had two teams vying for top spot. Rob Owsley’s trip 2/15 against Jacques Krige and Mike Long’s trip 2 / 15 against Keith Kolesky, the scores were both 27/12 which gave them the same aggregate. So where to now, who won the last end? They both won the last end with two shots each, so next we went to the second last end and here Rob’s team won and Mike’s team lost it. Rob’s team and Jean’s team were the winners of the competition and received the voucher for Ocean Basket.
On Saturday we had a zero turnout for bowls which I guess was to be expected after the rain and cold. This was no deterrent for our selected teams for the Whiteside competition in Grahamstown with weather forecasts of plenty of rain and icy temperatures. The weather turned not to bad but Rob Owsley’s A team did not get the result that we wanted, losing both their games while Stev Minnaar’s B team won both on the day. On Sunday weather improved and Rob’s team produced the goods winning both matches while Stev’s team won one and lost one. This placed the A team 11th in section and the B team fifth in section. Overall Kowie placed seventh in the tournament.
