Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet Club

THE Doris Ford was played on Wednesday October 26 at Port Alfred Club, and apart from the wind the day was warm and dry.

The Port Alfred ladies won all three of their games, with good bowls being the order of the day. On the same day and same venue the Les Clarke competition was played, with only one of the games being won by our men.

The Buco Trips weekend competition was played last weekend, with five games of 15 ends played in total. Saturday afternoon was very overcast with drizzle in the early morning into early afternoon. Play began at 1.30pm, and with two games to play, only finished at 6pm, in slightly damp, cool and windy conditions.

Sunday dawned clear, sunny and warm – perfect weather for bowls. Teams came from Albany Club, Grahamstown Club, Kenton Club, Kowie Club, PA Club and a Buco Selected team. Three games were played and keenly contested, and good bowling entertained the many spectators who attended.

The ladies’ section was won by the Kowie ladies, the men’s B section was won by Grahamstown club and the men’s A section was won by the Buco Selected team. The club winner for the monetary prize was Kowie Club. Second club winner for a lesser monetary prize was Albany. The winner of the Buco Trophy was Kowie Bowls Club. Many thanks to Buco for sponsoring this annual event which is well supported every year.

We look forward to participating in the Kenton Ladies’ Classic on November 8 and 9. The annual Triangular competition between PA club, Old Sebornians and Western Suburbs, will be held next weekend November 12 and 13. Visitors are welcome to come and watch some good bowls in a huge fun tournament. We vie for winning the trophy, which is of course the famed mounted chamber pot!

Duties for the week November 8-12: Tabs – Norman Jordaan and Jenny Wallace, Bar duty – Chris Armitage, Phil Taylor and Colette Reid, Ironing – Noel Heale.

Kenton Bowling Club

Last week’s activities were once again affected by inclement weather conditions.

Supa Thursday Trips managed to attract sufficient players for only one rink and our greens had to be closed on Saturday.

However, we did manage to honour our club’s commitment in two local competitions. On Wednesday six teams (four men and two ladies) travelled to Port Alfred Bowling Club for the penultimate rounds of the Les Clarke and Doris Ford competitions. The men’s side managed to win with an aggregate score of 23-17. Our ladies did not fare as well and lost both their games. Our ladies are out of the competition but our men can still win the trophy if they win the last round by more than 14 points, ie, with an aggregate score of 28 or better.

On Saturday, the rain moved east and the Annual Buco Trips competition could start in relative dry conditions. The weather gradually improved and all five rounds were completed as per schedule. Our men’s “A” and ladies’ teams both managed a second place in their relative sections. The A-section was won by a Buco Invitation team consisting of three Kenton players, Richard Beresford, Dave Wallace and Addie Wolf.

The preparations for next week’s Ladies’ Classic are well advanced and we are looking forward to a full-house of entries. Local business has been very supportive with the donation of many prizes and gifts and the event promises to live up to its enviable reputation. There will be NO tabs-in bowling on Wednesday November 9.

Last week’s attendance draw was forfeited and the jackpot increased to R1 800. There will be a steak ’n chips evening (R40 pp) on Friday November 4. This, with a possibility of winning R1 800, is an occasion not to be missed. Next weeks’ events: November 3 – Seeff Supa Thursday November 4 – Steak ’n chips with attendance draw November 5 – Social Saturday November 8 – Ladies’ Classic November 9 – Ladies’ Classic (No tabs-in) Next week’s duties: Tabs Cashier – Bryony Shone, Bar – John Gaylard, Joanne Lawson. Birthdays: November 5 Helen Birch, November 8 David West, November 9 Cecily Massart.

Kowie Bowling Club

Last Tuesday was “Megabucks” day even through we have two competitions to make up before the end of the month due to a full program in this month. With the usual good turnout for Tuesday we had some close games and a few runaways.

The day’s competition winner was Dick Schuurman’s team of trips John Hubbard and Neville Westcott who defeated Bob Ford’s team by 10 points and a big shot profit with visitor Stan Long’s team of trips as the runner-up with a full house 10 points over Pieter Stegmann’s team of trips.

Last Thursday we played the postponed Courtyard competition at which we welcomed seven visitors from Dewetsdorp who were on a bowling holiday and have played throughout our area. All the games were keenly contested with Pieter Stegmann’s team of Mazaan from Dewetsdorp, Ronnie Smith and Lina Woodard as the winner 2 / +8 over Keith Kolesky’s team (the winners received vouchers to The Courtyard). The runner-up was Anne from Dewets Dorp and her team of fours who defeated Jacques Krige’s team with 2 / +7. That was on a count-out with Jackie Kriel’s team of fours who had the same score.

The weekend had all Eastern Areas clubs playing in the Buco Trips competition. Sadly Bedford were unable to make it so the three coastal clubs made up one team each to represent the Buco Invitational team. Each team was required to play five games of 15 ends each against each of the participating clubs. At the end of the weekend the prize giving was officiated by the Port Alfred Club captain and a member of Buco. The section winners were: Men’s A – Buco Invitational, Men’s B – Grahamstown BC, Ladies – Kowie BC. The overall winner was Kowie BC on 72 points and the runner-up prize was presented to Albany BC.

Duties for the rest of year are being prepared and members will be notified.
