Periwinkle charity bowls them over

- MARLENE FRANKLIN

WHAT an absolute joy to arrive at the Kenton Bowling Club on the afternoon of December 21 and find it abuzz with excited activity.

The clubhouse was full to capacity of enthusiastic young folk, and a few oldies, happily supporting the bar and eager to learn more about playing the great game of bowls.

Periwinkle Charity, a group of three lovely ladies who, in order to contribute to the well-being of the community and the environment of this beautiful stretch of the Sunshine Coast, where they have all been frequent holidaymakers for years, decided to establish a charitable cause onto which they could focus their attention.

Sue Dovey, Angie Kaplan and Kathi Chapman, ably supported by John and Raoul, started the Periwinkle Golf Classic in 2004 and through incredible generosity of holidaymakers and locals they have raised more than R2.5-million over the years.

Wednesday saw the first of their Bowls Charitable Events, where there was so much fun and enjoyment that it pleasantly surprised me when Sue told me they had raised more than R65000 on the afternoon.

Congratulations, girls, on a splendid, enjoyable afternoon, where the enthusiasm of the young folk as they played bowls was infectious! Spectators were just as excited as the players and good shots were loudly applauded.

The club’s three greens were full to capacity, tickets having sold out in no time at all. How great to see youth on the greens, even if I do enjoy seeing the old folk enjoying being together out in the fresh air.

The winners of the competition were Kevin, Sarah, Matt and James Alcock, with runners-up Che Baker, Paisley Baker, James Melvill and Nic Chapman, and in third place Marc Knowles, Tracey Knowles, Jann Hamman and Blake Evans. Well bowled to you all.

The funky hat prize was awarded to Caiti Chapman, Greg Samson, Annie Kuzewski and Kathi Chapman. Well done team, great hats.

Heads and Tails was won by Matthew Alcock. Cheers Matt!

And more good news – the announcement by Sue that the tournament will be held again next year was greeted with loud cheers and applause, confirming that the afternoon had been much enjoyed by all. Yes, folk, bowls can be fun!
