A new year for Port Alfred Tablers

- ROB KNOWLES

ANOTHER year has passed and last year’s chairman of Port Alfred Round Table 177, Adriaan Potgieter, handed over the chain of office to his vice chairman, Dominicue Averbuch, at the AGM last Thursday evening.

Averbuch who will lead the Tablers for 2017 said he was honoured to have been selected as chairman and that he would do his best to ensure that Round Table would grow and be even more successful during his term in office.

Averbuch and his wife were selected to visit Germany last year and represent the club at a meeting of 177 clubs from around the world.

“Meeting the Tablers from other countries and being taken to castles and botanical gardens in Germany was a great honour,” he told the members who jokingly commented that there seemed to be a lot of drinking of beer and wine during his visit.

Averbuch and his wife, together with another couple, will be travelling again this year, this time to France to attend another Round Table 177 function.

Round Table donates money, time and labour to several projects throughout the year including a bursary to Port Alfred High School, sponsorship of junior golf, donations to Hospice along.

Last year more than R22 000 was collected from events such as Winter Knights and the Kowie Carnival, and handed over to charities.

Former chairman Potgieter, who completed his second term in the chair, said he had a great year in office and thanked the members for all their contributions in making Port Alfred one of the most successful branches in the Eastern Cape.

Also present at the meeting were several 41’ers, those former members of Round Table who have passed their 40th birthday and are no longer eligible to participate as members.

However, as Potgieter said in his outgoing speech, the 41’ers add a lot of experience to the mix, and are always willing and able to assist in projects and events, so they should be used as necessary.

This year’s committee was also announced including Frikkie Coetzee as vice chairman, Johan van Zyl as PRO, Mike Mayo as secretary, Pierre Coetzee as treasurer and both Julius Horack and Brendan Marais will look after the clubhouse.
