Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet Club

SANDRA Wiblin and John Hodges won their section in the first three rounds of the Eastern Areas mixed pairs played in Grahamstown on January 7 and 8.

Last weekend, rounds four, five and six were played, again in Grahamstown, but unfortunately with our players having a less successful result.

The finals of this event will be played this coming weekend.

The club had its first sponsored competition for the year on Tuesday January 10.

Many thanks to Guido’s for their vouchers. The winners were Trevor Frost and his team, and second place went to Colette Reid and her team. Well played.

The upcoming competitions are: men’s drawn fours round one on Tuesday January 24 and the mixed singles rounds one and two on Wednesday January 25. Duties for the week January 24-28:

Tabs – Helen Thompson and Ron Orford, Bar – Dave Lang, Gordon Goff and John Bennett, Ironing – Trevor Frost.

A reminder to all our members that should you have any news and/or photographs relevant to bowls and our club, to please forward it to ricrod.pa@gmail.com and he will update our website.

The year started off with a bang. Most of our members resumed bowling after family and friends had returned home and the “empty nest” became too lonely.

Rob Croly and Bryony Shone came out of the starting block with a bang and won their section in the first round Eastern Areas (EA) mixed pairs.

They followed this up with winning the finals last weekend.

As EA mixed pairs champions they will participate in the Eastern Province finals this coming weekend. We wish them all the best and good bowling.

Last Wednesday saw the first round of the Dias Insurance Consultants trips jackpot.

This is an annual competition and runs over 11 months. The team’s score for a round is allocated to each player in that team. The individual scores are accumulated throughout the year, with the final winner being the player with the highest aggregate score.

After the first round, the ladies are showing the men a clean pair of heels by occupying the first six positions. But the “Fat Lady” hasn’t sung yet!

The club has started a concerted drive to attract new bowlers to our sport.

Last Wednesday was the first day of the All-comers bowls programme. The objective of the programme is to introduce interested people to the game of bowls in a relaxed manner, while playing a real competitive game.

The emphasis is on learning by having fun. All a prospective player needs are a pair of sneakers with not too pronounced heels and soles. This is to protect the grass. The club will provide bowls and other equipment that may be required.

The first session was a great success and was attended by ten players. All-comer Bowls will be a regular Wednesday feature at our club. The sessions start at 2pm and are open to anyone who is not a regular bowler. Contact Roy Wilkins at

wilkins@border.co.za or 074-542-6748 for further details.

Friday Night attendance draw was forfeited by Luther O’Connell for not being present. Next week

s prize money goes up to R600. The motto is “if you want to win, you had better be in”. The draw can be done at any time between 6pm and 7pm. Next week’s events: January 20 – Personal Trust Trips Next week’s duties (January 23): Tabs – Pam and Rob Bowker, Bar – Sandi and Ivor Rule.

IT appears all the holidaymakers have gone home and we are back into bowls in full swing.

The past week we have scarified and top-dressed our A (Charles Louw) green in preparation for a busy bowls year. Today we play the first round of the inter-club Timm/ Vroom Cup competitions against Port Alfred.

The Eastern Province Mixed Pairs final is in Port Elizabeth this weekend, but sadly we have no teams through in this competition.

Last Tuesday, we played our internal SPAR Competition with a full green turnout. Jackie Kriel’s team of trips, Dave Banks and Lina Woodard beat Eddie Hoseck’s team by eight points and a good shot profit, with Pieter Stegmann’s team of trips in the runner-up position.

The winners took home SPAR vouchers and the club would like to thank Rosehill SPAR for their continued support for the New Year.

Last Thursday, we played a Snowball competition and one game of Club Drawn Pairs was played, with Dave Banks and Sally Moffat beating Jackie Kriel and Laurie May by 8/ +6.

In the Snowball, the number drawn was eight for the score on the four selected ends. There was no team with the correct score for the day so this one will roll over to next week.

Saturday was another good turnout of a full green of trips for the Courtyard Competition. The winner was Gavin Deenik’s team of Allan Sheridan and Linda May, who beat Lucille Keyter by 2 points and a largish shot profit, and the runner-up was Rodney Gradwell’s team of Don Munro and David Thomas, who beat Jackie Kriel’s team.

Both winner and runner-up received Courtyard vouchers.

The club would like to thank the Courtyard for their continued support for the New Year. Duties for January 23-29: Greens – (Roll) Michael van der Sandt, (Mark) Neville Westcott and Trevor Lentz, Tabs – (Cash) Flame Metter, (Select) Charles Louw, Bar – Delene Deenik and Eddie Hoseck.
