Talk of the Town

Quiz fundraiser to help struggling soup kitchen

-

THE next Talk of the Town/MyPond Hotel Quiz to benefit the Port Alfred Soup Kitchen (PASK) takes place on Thursday next week.

The fundraiser for PASK, the third by TotT in the past six months, has been a boon as the soup kitchen is in dire straits.

“After 18 years in operation we thought we might have to close our doors towards the end of last year, but the generosity of our sponsors and supporters has enabled us to continue for another few months,” PASK fundraiser Ivy Gulliford said.

“We are awaiting Lotto’s decision as to whether we shall receive more funding and are most concerned that we will not be able to continue supporting the thousands of men, women and children in our community who are living way below the bread line.”

Increasing poverty, demands for assistance and current economic challenges are making the PASK increasingly difficult to sustain. Although there are many in the community, including businesses and individuals who help, main sponsor Lotto has not allocated funds in nearly two years.

“The situation has now reached a critical stage, so in December last year we were forced to sell one of the two bakkies which are used to deliver food to the various locations. We also had to cut operating costs and sadly even reduce food portions,” Gulliford said.

PASK is a holistic organisation which does not only supply food but caters for other needs such as clothing, shoes and blankets, while not neglecting spiritual food and needs as well.

“We therefore plead and appeal to everyone in the community to lend a helping hand by either supporting fundraising events such as the quarterly quiz, fun runs, advertising on the bakkie, or with casual or regular and frequent donations of anything from R10 upwards per month,” Gulliford said.

“We have debit orders for those who would like to commit with a monthly contribution.”

Please contact Ivy Gulliford at 084-585-3442 or Debra Harris at 083-260-0334 in this regard.

One way the public can help, is by supporting the Talk of the Town/MyPond Hotel quiz in conjunction with Stenden South Africa, held at MyPond Hotel, at 6.30 for 7pm.

The fun-filled event for teams of four at R100 per person has categories of music, movies, famous faces, general knowledge and geography among others – something for everyone.

There are great prizes for the top three spots as well as lucky draws.

Prizes include MyPond Hotel meal vouchers valued at R1 200 sponsored by Stenden South Africa, four Stenden hoodies and a river cruise for four from the Halyards Hotel.

There are also meal vouchers from Penny Farthing, Decadent and Cafe Reset, a meal voucher/movie combo from Spur, gift vouchers from Leach Pharmacy and a gift voucher from D’vine Deli.

To book contact Ivy or Debra on 084-585-3442 or 083-260-0334.
