BOWLSBANTER

- ... what’s happening

We played a Snowball competition with the score of 7 being drawn for the four ends and no team had the correct score, let that Snowball kitty grow.

Next week Thursday the coastal clubs play round one of the Horace and Peg Purdon Cups at the Kowie Club and then Sunday February 5 is the first round of the Eastern Areas (EA) Men’s Leagues 1 and 2 at Grahamstown Club. Greens – (Roll) Stephen Minnaar, (Mark) Peter Ford and Ivo Chunnet, Tabs – (Cash) Jonine McFarlane, (Select) Charles Louw, Bar – Mike Beaumont and Roger Purdon. Saturday and strong winds on last Wednesday.

Tabs-in last Tuesday was well supported and it was black box time once again. Sheila Penny had her name drawn, but the key did not open the box, so the kitty continues to grow.

The first round of the men’s drawn fours was also played last Tuesday. Last Wednesday the first and second rounds of the mixed drawn singles was played amid a lot of camaraderie and good bowls being played. Come Saturday our Radue-sponsored trips competition was held, and the ladies were able to take first prize with the winning team of Elzabe Rodrigues, Sue Purdon and Robin Collett coming in with a 21 shot profit.

Anton Strombeck and his team came in second with +15, and Maureen Heale and her team came in third with +9.

Well done all, especially in that wind. Dave Freeme, Trevor Frost, Sandra Wiblin and Maureen Heale were in Jeffreys Bay last Sunday, to take part in EP versus Eden practice rounds.

All four players have been selected to represent EP Seniors this year. Congratulations.

Upcoming events: On Saturday the EA men’s 1st and 2nd league round one will be played in Grahamstown.

On February 7 the ladies drawn fours round two and men’s drawn fours round three will be played. Our men’s senior singles round one will be played on February 8 at 1pm. Don’t forget to make up a team and enter the Albany GBS to be played on Saturday February 11. Tabs – Sandra Wiblin and Norman Jordaan, Bar – Noel Heale and Martin Leonard, Ironing – Gordon Goff. Last Wednesday’s summer weather brought out our members in full force. Tabs-in was well attended with a full green of players participating.

Supa Thursday trips was won by Roy Wilkins and his team.

Friday was to be this year’s first squad practice for the EA league which starts on February 5.

Halfway through the session the heavens opened and a welcome shower forced the players off the green. The players watched on with mixed emotions. They didn’t know whether to be disappointed for the cancellation of the session or to be delighted with the rain. Delight won the day!

Friday’s attendance draw was “lost” by Linda Grobler for not being present when the draw was done.

This past Monday saw the first round of the Kenton Business League. It was good to see a lot of familiar faces from last year with some welcome new participants.

A lot of enthusiasm and fun was generated if the cheering from the green was anything to go by. The competition will be run over the next six Mondays starting at 5.15pm.

Fans and spectators are most welcome.

Our club has implemented some innovations to make our tabs-in games more interesting and competitive.

From this week, there will be a prize associated with each tabs-in game.

No score cards need to be completed. Skips are requested to record their scores after the completion of the afternoon’s games on a special white board in the clubhouse.

We will also be varying play formats and scoring options more regularly.

Club captains will publish the upcoming week’s play schedule on the notice boards in advance.

Upcoming events: Thursday February 2 – Peg and Horace Purdon at Kowie; Friday February 3 – Friday Meal is Chicken Kebab, Rice and Salad for R25. Book on notice board; Saturday February 4 – Social Saturday; Sunday February 5 – Second League first round; Thursday February 9 – Seeff Supa Thursday.
