Roscoe’s/ Volo win 2nd round

-

THE second round of the Kenton Bowls Business League was completed on Monday, and won by the Roscoe’s/Volo team with a shot profit of 22. The 12 teams are drawn into two sections and the final will be played between the two teams who each won their section. The current standing is:

Kariega section 4 points – Prestons 4 points – Dias Insurance Consultants “B” 2 points – Pandora’s Home Industry 2 Points – Chas Everitt 0 points – The Final Touch 0 points – Brick Force (FD Theron Architects)

Bushman’s section 4 points – Roscoe’s/Volo 4 points – BUCO 2 points – Pam Golding’s Panthers 2 points – Kenton Garage 0 points – High Rollers (FD Theron Architects) 0 points – Dias Insurance Consultants “A” ONE of the most exciting games seen at Kowie for a long time took place in the club’s drawn pairs competition.

Dave Tyrrell and Gerald Mills came up against Jackie Kriel and Lawrie May in a tense match which found them peels after 21 ends. Kriel drew two shots to enable this to happen.

This, in turn, resulted in a playoff with an extra end. Kriel was holding shot when Tyrrell went on to the mat to play his last bowl. He rose to the occasion splendidly to rest out the shot bowl and take the honours in a thrilling match.

This meant that Tyrrell and Mills had to play the more fancied combination of Keith Koleski and Rob Walker in the final. Koleski started well and was cruising when he built up a lead of 20 shots to three.

However, Tyrrell had other ideas and fought back bravely before eventually going down 22-19 in another exciting finish.

The Megabucks competition saw some unusually high scores.

The competition was won by Keith Koleski with Mike Pfotenhauer, Jean Churchley and Gill Turner, with the big score of 10 plus 24.

This year’s Eastern Areas (EA) men’s league got under way in Grahamstown on Sunday with mixed fortunes for the Kowie teams.

Playing conditions were not easy on heavy greens. In the first league, Kowie won two and lost two games. Notable victories came from Jacques Krige’s team of Rob Owsley, Eric Kent and Gavin Deenik, who won both their games. They had a particularly good win against the fancied Albany team skipped by Stan Long.

In the second league, Kowie registered the same result by winning two and losing two of their matches.

It is early days yet with plenty still to be played for.

Last week, Kowie hosted the Peg and Horace Purdon trips competitions, also with mixed results.
