Top athletics, swimming, cricket and tennis in the mix as year kicks into gear

The senior PAHS girls played their first tennis shield match against the Victoria Girls High first team last Wednesday afternoon and lost by a narrow margin of 7-5 games. Alyssa Davis and Lisa-Mari Coetzee won both their single and double matches.

The under-16 PAHS girls lost five games to three against their PJ Olivier counterpar­ts. The U16 girls also played their first shield match on Wednesday against the Victoria Girls High U15A team.

Despite fighting hard, the PAHS team lost the encounter 4-2. Tammi Booysen won both her single and double matches.

Last Friday, PAHS intermedia­te phase hosted 13 schools on the fields for a junior school athletics zonal day. Despite windy conditions, a fantastic day was enjoyed by all.

Congratula­tions are extended to PAHS pupils who have been selected to represent the Makana District at the Sarah Baartman Local District Municipal meeting in Port Elizabeth on February 17: Lily Heny (1 200m, girls 10 years), Ntumelenga Malatsi (100m, girls 10 years), Adam Schultz (1200m, boys 11 years), Abenathi Maneli (150m, girls 12 years), Liyabona Xanti (100m, 150m, 1200m, boys 12 years), Kamva Zweni (100m, 150m, boys 12 years), Abenathi Mhlambile (200m, girls 13 years) and Lithaletu Mazana (100m, 800m, boys 13 years).

The following PAHS swimmers secured top-five positions at the Nelson Mandela Bay Schools Gala held in Port Elizabeth:

Kelly-Page Scott – third in 50m butterfly; Emily Beatt – third in 50m freestyle; William Beatt – second in 50m backstroke, second in 50m freestyle; Kate Tinley – fourth in 50m butterfly, second in 50m backstroke, second in 50m freestyle and Luke Lemmer fourth in 50m freestyle, second in 50m backstroke, second in 50m butterfly and first in 50m breaststro­ke.

PAHS swimmers representi­ng the Port Alfred Swimming Club fared well at the Uitenhage Interclub gala last Saturday bringing home six medals: Emily Beatt, silver in 100m backstroke, Kate Tinley, a gold for 100m breaststro­ke and Will Beatt a bronze for 50m breaststro­ke and gold for 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle and 50m backstroke.

Also last Saturday, the PAHS first cricket team faced off against Graeme College second team.

PAHS captain Dayne Jacobs won the toss and elected to bat first against Graeme College and were all out for 135 runs in 21.4 overs. PAHS top-order batsmen Geoffrey Calitz scored 56 and Justin van Rooyen 27 runs.

A combinatio­n of excellent fielding and fast bowling saw PAHS winning the match. Joel Austin took six for 25 in seven overs, including a hat trick, while Jacobs took four wickets for 30 runs. Graeme College were all out for 61 runs in 14.3 overs. The man of the match award was shared by Calitz and Austin.

The U15 PAHS cricket team also won the toss and elected to bat against Graeme College’s U14A team. PAHS scored 290 runs in their 40 overs with Reece Naude excelling with a total of 145 runs. Jayden Roesstorff scored 34 runs. Graeme College responded with just 204 runs. The pick of the bowlers were Jayden Roesstorff who took two wickets for 23 runs in eight overs and Sima Mata who chipped in two wickets. Reece Naude brought home the man of the match award.

A tight game by the PAHS U13A cricket team against the Woodridge College 13B team had spectators on their feet. Having won the toss, electing to bat first, PAHS notched up 102 runs in 27 overs, all out.

Lihle Maphekula made 24 followed by Kaine Heny’s 22 runs. Heny secured two wickets for six runs in his five overs and Rylan Payne took three wickets for 17 runs in his five overs. Kyle Labuschagn­e and Kamva Zweni each secured a wicket. Despite a fine display of teamwork and great spirit, the Woodridge team reached the PAHS score with just four balls remaining. Woodridge won the game by three wickets.

The U11A team also travelled to Woodridge and played their U11B team in near perfect conditions on Saturday. PAHS won the toss and went in to bat. Despite losing two wickets in quick succession, Caden Moller and Onwabile Bibo restored stability at the crease with a total of 159 runs in 30 overs scored. Moller was man of the match for his 52 runs, not out.

Four wickets fell before lunch. Bibo took two wickets for four runs and Moller took one wicket having only bowled two balls. Woodridge were all out for 110 runs. PAHS won the match by 49.

PAHS U11B cricket team batted first against Yellow Woods and scored 59 runs in 20 overs. Yellow Woods reached the same score after eight overs, thus winning by five wickets. PAHS players Lou Coetzee scored 14 runs and Zuko Bouni took four wickets.
