Be still and know that I am God

“BE still, and know that I am God.” (Psalms 46:10)

Some people, especially in the metropolitan areas, define life as a “rat race” Living next to the Indian Ocean in such a beautiful coastal town is a privilege. I wonder sometimes if we truly appreciate its beauty and the tranquillity of life it provides.

This peace is often foiled by such things as politics, economics, relationships, heartaches, ill-health and trials of life.

Perhaps at times we feel like the Psalmist who said, “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me?” (Psalms 42:5).

Being still amid such turmoil is not easy, for our natural reaction is to fret and fear.

The Psalmist addresses himself in the latter part of Psalm 42:5 (quoted above) by saying, “Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God”.

The realisation that God can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine is a source of comfort and hope. The Lord told us not to worry about tomorrow, “for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:34).

The knowledge of God’s love, mercy and grace results in a peace that passes understanding. Trusting Him with all our heart quietens our mind and spirit. As a little child feels safe and secure in the arms of his parents, so does a child of God in the everlasting arms of the Heavenly Father.

Perhaps walking along the shore, quietly meditating on the greatness of God, will produce more healing than anything this world has to offer.

“You will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you.” (Isaiah 26:3).
