who died in 1927 when the town hall was blown up by one Huibrecht Jacob de Leeuw in an attempt to cover up evidence of his embezzleme­nt of town funds. The new town hall, built in 1928, was declared a South African Heritage Site in 1995.

Friday’s attendance draw was won. This was no surprise as we had a fair turnout for the social event where we said “goodbye” to some of our past members and “hello” to some new ones.

Members were requested to bring a plate of snacks to add some sustenance to the usual beers and wine on sale.

Adie Wilkins was the winner of the R600 and next week’s prize money reverts to R500. Tabs – Don Young; Bar – Lee Slater and Ken Nixon. Calendar (March 3-11): Saturday March 4 – GBS mixed fours at Port Alfred, also Social Saturday, Wednesday March 8 – Dias Trips Jackpot.

Kowie Bowling Club

Last Thursday, we played the Kenny’s Sports Pub Competitio­n with a good turnout to fill the B Green. Delene Deenik and her team of Don Munro, Roy Wilkins and Jacky Watson were in fine form to defeat Stan Richter’s team with a full house 10 points and 18-shot profit to be presented with the Kenny’s vouchers. The runner-up was Bob Ford’s team of fours who defeated Rod Gradwell’s team, also with a full house of points. Thank you to Mike Kenny for his sponsorshi­p of this competitio­n.

Last Thursday, we played a delayed Courtyard competitio­n as a result of inclement weather earlier in the month.

However, I must apologise but I have mislaid the cards for this competitio­n and cannot remember who the winner was. I did not play on the day but do remember that we had a good turnout.
