LADIES’ GOLF

February 21: Weather-wise a pleasant afternoon for the 32 players who registered for an individual Stableford sponsored by Viv Jordan and playing for the Port Alfred High School Cup. Shirley Heny's 43 points pipped three other players by one point to make her a trophy winner two weeks in a row, this time for the Port Alfred High School Cup. Yvonne Hill was runner-up on 42 points counting out Linda Dobson into third place and Finula Pepper into fourth. There were no two-clubs holed on the day. Nevertheless, Linda Dobson had a great day on the par threes being closest to the pin on Top Carpets' sixth and “nearest-for-two” on River Spa's 13th. Pogs Smith was closest on the eighth and Pru Peacock on Wimpy's 11th. The longest drive competitions were held on the seventh. Kim Gardner and Sylvia Avery struck their balls the furthest in the low and higher handicap sections respectively. The course is playing easier as demonstrated by some very good individual scores. The best nett scores were recorded by Finula Pepper, Shirley Heny (65), Linda Dobson, Yvonne Hill (66), Heather van Harmelen (67), Kim Gardner, Joy Alston (68), Sonia Reynolds and Margie Siegers (69). The competition on march 7 will be the Monthly Medal sponsored by Pick n Pay.

FRESH STOP PORT ALFRED MIXED

February 25: Gale force westerlies, along with many regulars exhausted after playing in Friday's Hospice day, were probably the reasons for the field being limited to just 18 players on Saturday. The conditions were really difficult as were reflected in the morning’s scores carded in the usual two-to-count Stableford alliance. The winners Gesa Mackeprang, Margie Reid, Liz Mangham and Dave Kirk were way and above better than the rest of the field with 88 points. In second place on a lowly 80 points, were Glynnis Renecle, Terry Harris, Paul and Sandy Fryer. The weekly energy drinks were awarded to Lyn West, Launa Kirk and Rusty Hallam after recoding just 76 points. Eric Segers sank the only two-club of the morning (sixth) and Sandy won the bottle of wine for being closest to the pin on the eighth. Of special mention is the eagle sank by Lorna on the par five 18th.

KGB RESULTS

Tuesday February 21: Really pleasant weather conditions confronted the field for Tuesday's KGB golf. No fewer than 55 players turned out to be drawn into thirteen four-balls and one 3-ball in the usual two-to-count Stableford alliance. Barrie B Brady found himself in the winner's slot again with 93 points, this time partnered with Dave Curran, Bob Shaw and John Muggeridge. The runners-up slot went to Mike McNamara, Chris Niebieszczanski, Rusty Hallam and Cliff Roberts on 91 points. The dreaded Hamer en Sukkel trophy, which goes to the team with the lowest score, adorned the 19th hole table of Patrick O'Kelly, Bruce Tucker, Mike Dobbs and Paul Fryer (nett 73). Mike holed the only 2-club of the morning (13th). The best nett scores were shot by Barrie, Bob (67), David Groenewald (68), Rusty, Mike and Launa Kirk (69). After the morning's proceedings, a most enjoyable lunch was served at the club by Penny and staff for KGB members and their partners.

Friday February 24: A warm morning with brisk easterly winds formed a pleasant backdrop for the 50 players who turned out to play the usual two-to-count Stableford alliance in two three-balls and eleven four-balls. Gerald Churchley, Bruce Tucker, Steve Kennedy and Johny Johnston carded a great 93 points to win the competition. Runners-up Chris Niebieszczanski, Nick Oosthuizen, Cliff Roberts and James Weisters were just two points to the rear with 91. A total of 81 points were not enough to avoid the Hamer en Sukkel and so it went to Tommy Meyer, John Muggeridge, Jimmy van Rensburg and Brian Shirley on that score. Mike McNamara made it two in a row when it came to sinking par three birdies, one on Tuesday and another on Friday, this time on the eighth. No others were sunk on either day. James Weisters shot a great nett 65 whilst Chris, Mike (68), Lorna Kirk, Johny and Brian Reid (69) would have all gone home contented with their efforts on the day.
