Golf team secures third spot, second XI bowlers excel to beat St Andrews

PORT Alfred High School (PAHS) Senior Boys Golf Team, comprising Wian van Aswegan, Benjamin Burger, Meekah de Sousa and Jayden Roesstorff, travelled to Cradock to participat­e in the Interschoo­ls Invitation­al Tournament held on Friday and Saturday.

Playing three rounds of golf in different formats against teams from Grey High School, DF Malherbe High School, Hoerskool Framesby and Daniel Pienaar Technical High School in hot conditions, PAHS did well to secure third place.

Van Aswegan was also awarded the EP Junior Golf Order of Merit, and will represent the province in the U19 Schools team. De Sousa has been selected for the EP U15 golf team and will play in the provincial team at an interprovi­ncial golf tournament at Fish River Sun next week. Tennis

On Wednesday last week, the senior PAHS team played against the DSG 2nd team.

Both teams played well and Port Alfred High won the match five games to three.

On Friday last week the team met the Kingswood College 2nd team and the match was drawn 3-3. A games’ count out was held and PAHS emerged victorious by one game.

The U16 girls’ team lost their encounter against the DSG 3rd team six games to seven. Olona Landu and Mondi Ntanga were commended during Assembly for coming from 5-1 down to win their match 8-6. The U13 PAHS girls’ team triumphed against their Kingswood junior counterpar­ts winning the singles by 45 games to 27 and the doubles by 19 games to 14. The U11 and U13 PAHS boys’ teams however lost to the Kingswood Primary boys’ A teams. Onwabile Bobo won his singles for the U11 team by five games to two. Cricket

PAHS 2nd XI won the toss this past Saturday and chose to bat first, sending St Andrews 7th team out to field. Port Alfred High made 170 runs off 20 overs with Zimi Sonyaka scoring 36 and Kerwin Scott, 31 runs. St Andrews were immediatel­y in trouble with wickets falling under a persistent bowling attack. They were all out six runs short of the PAHS score. Herchelle Kieviets and Breyton Scheepers took the most wickets.

St Andrews College 6th XI won the toss and sent PAHS’s U15A team out to field this past Saturday. St Andrews notched up an impressive 165 runs for five wickets in their 20 overs. Mihlali Marasi bowled well for PAHS picking up two wickets for 31 runs in his four overs, while Sima Mata took one wicket for 15 runs in his four overs. Despite a concerted effort, PAHS lost the match, having scored just 110 runs. Kyle Nganqu was top scorer with 38 runs. In what was a busy week for PAHS U15B cricketers, the team loss the toss on Tuesday February 28 to Kenton-on-Sea’s Ikamva Lesizwe Public School and immediatel­y went onto the bowling attack. Axole Damba took three wickets for seven runs and Luke Swart, three wickets for 14 runs. Ikamva Lesizwe were all out for 57 runs. PAHS surpassed their score losing only five wickets in what was a one-sided, yet friendly match.

PAHS U15B cricket team then played their Graeme College counterpar­ts last Wednesday, 1 losing the match by 64 runs. Graeme College elected to bat first and posted 164 runs for four wickets. Aaron Delport and Lizo Dayile scored 19 and 17 runs respective­ly, for Port Alfred High and did well in the face of a strong bowling attack.

In the team’s third match of the week, PAHS U15B played St Andrews College U14C team on Saturday.. Having won the toss and electing to bat first, St Andrews scored 202 runs in their 20 overs. PAHS’s bowling and fielding were disappoint­ing. Batsmen Inga Funde, 31 runs and Siviwe Draai, 30 runs displayed a fine fighting spirit aided by Luke Swart with 19 runs, but it wasn’t enough to win the match. PAHS were all out for 115 runs thus losing the match by 87 runs.

Last week PAHS U13A cricket team won the toss and elected to bowl first, sending the Graeme College U13D team in to bat. PAHS put on a great bowling and fielding performanc­e and Graeme College were all out for 58 runs. Rylan Payne took 4/20, Kamva Zweni 2/8, Kyle Labuschagn­e 2/6 and Kaine Heny 2/8.

Zweni and Labuschagn­e dominated the batting and secured an eight- wicket victory for PAHS. Zweni scored 33 runs off 20 balls and Labuschagn­e 20 runs off 12 balls. Man of the match was shared between Zweni and Payne.

The U11B PAHS team batted first, having lost the toss against Graeme College U11C team last Wednesday. The team put on a solid performanc­e scoring 160 runs in their 20 overs with Caden Muller scoring 13 runs and Zuko Buni 18 runs. A concerted effort by PAHS bowlers saw Graeme College all out for 150 runs. PAHS won the match by 10 runs. Swimming

Several Port Alfred High School swimming records tumbled during a highly spirited Championsh­ip Gala last Thursday. Results will be published in next week’s Talk of the Town.
