BOWLSBANTER

- ... what’s happening

afternoon. Apart from providing an opportunity to play some different “shots” it also produced some great bowling. More members are urged to make up Bounce Games for Friday afternoons as it will improve bowling in general in the club. Friday night’s attendance draw for R500 was lost by Kris Gallagher. Next week’s prize money goes up to R600.

Corrine Brown was welcomed as a new member to our club on Social Saturday.

It is always a daunting event for a novice bowler to participate in their first “official” game. Stompie Bellingan‘s coaching had prepared Corrine well and she acquitted herself admirably as a lead. It is obvious that she will be a force to be reckoned with in the future. A Selectors Prayer Blessed are they who can play sport

Blessed are they who can still be taught

Blessed are they who accept with grace

Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet Club

Our annual GBS sponsored competition was held on Saturday March 4 and was won by a Port Alfred team consisting of Dave Lang, Eddie Senar, John Bennett and Elsabe Rodrigues as well as Nolene Kirsten who stood in for Elsabe in the morning session.

Second and third prizes went to Anton Strombeck and his team from Port Alfred and Stan Long and his team from Albany. Congratulations to all the winners.

Thanks to the members who worked so hard to make it such a success and, of course, to the teams from Albany, Grahamstown, Kenton and Kowie. We were thrilled to receive an entry from our sponsors, GBS, and we thank them most sincerely for their continued support.

We wish Maureen Heale, Sandra Wiblin, Dave Freeme and Trevor Frost good bowling as they take part in the Senior Inter-District championships which takes place in Pietermaritzburg from March 11 to 18.

We welcome two new members to our club, i.e, Jenny Waters and Graham Ellis and hope that they enjoy many years of happy bowling with us.

A reminder to all members that we celebrate birthday night on March 14. Please remember to bring a plate of snacks.

Our entertainment committee has arranged a Bingo evening on Wednesday March 15 at 6pm. We invite members and visitors to join us. All are welcome. Hamburgers will be available on sale, please support the club.

Our sponsors on Tuesday March 14 are Personal Trust and our thanks go to them for their support.

Kowie Bowling Club

Last Tuesday we had a good turnout for bowls and played Megabucks competition for the first time with the new increased prize money.

Bob Ford and his team of Alan Sheridan, Dave Thomas and Neville Westcott were in fine form, defeating Jacques Krige’s team of fours by 10 points and plenty of shot profit. Runner-up was Dick Schuurman’s team of fours who defeated Lee Botma’s team in a much closer game.

Last Thursday we played our Snowball competition with the four ends drawn the score of 1 was drawn and Peter Ford’s team, Rodney Gradwell’s team and Michael Long’s team matched the score. So the competition does not allow for the kitty to be shared and it rolls over to the next competition.

Friday night was Club Draw Night and weight and pay steak night supplied and supported by Pick n Pay. The club membership number was drawn and we will have to keep the number secret because I could not find out whose number it was. The person was not there. For the attendance prize the number was also unknown – the person was not in attendance so there was no payout for this month’s draw. The night was very well attended with 100 names being on the list for bookings.

On Saturday we had five mixed teams attend the Port Alfred GBS Competition which was played in delightful bowling weather. You will be able to read the results in the Port Alfred bowls column.

At our club we had an expected smallish turnout for tabs bowls where we played our Guido’s-sponsored competition. Lee Botma’s team of Don Munro and Lucia Nel defeated Mike Tomlinson’s team 2/ + 9 with the runner up 2/ + 8. Winners enjoy your Guido’s meals. Today’s runner-up was Mike Beaumont’s team of fours who defeated Michael Pfotenhauer’s team in a much closer game.

Duties for week March 13-19: Greens – (Roll) Eddie Hoseck, (Mark) Don Kelly and Keith Kolesky, Tabs – (Cash) PeeWee Tomlinson, Bar – Brian and Paddy Burger.
