LADIES’ RESULTS February 28: It was without doubt the hottest day of the year, although the sticky, humid conditions were partly relieved by strong, gusty easterly winds. Nevertheless, a great turnout of 35 competitors registered to play a betterball Stableford for the Centenary Cup. Cindi Claasens and Joanne Hilliar carded a great 47 points to win the competition and the Centenary Cup. Glynnis Renecle and Helen Lockyear came home second (46 points) with Pru Peacock and Sandy Fryer claiming third spot with 45 points. There were a number of good individual nett scores, the best being Helen (65), Wendy Counihan, Pru (68), Lynne Lake and Joanne (69). The longest drive competitions were held on the ninth and struck by Tracy Stanley and Linda Dobson in the low and higher handicap sections respectively. Lynne Lake (eighth), Kim Gardner and Helen Lockyear (13th) all made par three birdies on the holes indicated. Joy Alston’s drive was the closest to the pin on Top Carpet's sixth, Lynne Lake's on the 8th and Yvonne Hill's on Wimpy's 11th. The competition on March 14 will be an individual Stableford sponsored by Viv Jordan. FRESH STOP PORT ALFRED MIXED March 4: A cool and overcast start to proceedings did change to hot, muggy conditions as the morning progressed. A light westerly breeze did ease the discomfort to some degree. With many of the fairer gender playing in the Belmont Open, a smaller than usual field of just 28 players were drawn into mixed four-balls to play the normal two-to-count Stableford alliance. Uwe Blunk led his covey of Glyn Renecle, Danny Tarpani and Derek Sinclair to victory with 94 points. Juan Southey, Donald McGarvie, Margie and Brian Reid were close runners-up on 91. The weekly resuscitating energy drinks were awarded to Rosie Calmeyer-Leach, Terry Harris, Dee and Cecil Jones-Phillipson for coming bottom of the points list on 82 points. The sponsor's bottle of wine went to Cecil for being closest to the pin on the eighth. He went on to birdie the hole as did Pogs Smith and Derek Sinclair. Steve Kennedy made a two-club on the sixth. There were a number of good nett scores: Uwe (63), Pogs (64), Brian Reid (68), Greg Shanks, Guy Cash and Donald McGarvie (69). KGB RESULTS Tuesday February 28: Stiff easterly breezes were seen as more comforting from the day's extreme heat rather than offering challenges in play. Forty-seven players braved the soaring temperatures to play a two-to-count Stableford Alliance in one three-ball and 11 four-balls. For the second time in his long KGB career, Roy de Wet, this time partnered alongside David Groenewald, John Crandon and Peter Reed, found himself in the winning covey which amassed 95 points in total. Second-placed Dave Kirk, Andy Manson, Eugene Erasmus and Mike McNamara were four points behind on 91. It was a much more difficult morning for Mark Warren, Martin Weaver and Brian Shirley as they could only card 71 + 5 = 76 points. Consequently, they spent their 19th hole relaxation and beverage time accompanied by the dreaded Hamer en Sukkel trophy. David birdied two par 3 putts (sixth and 11th) to win the two-club kitty for his team. Bruce Tucker (eighth) and Dave Kirk (11th) both birdied the holes indicated. The best nett scores of the morning were made by Paul Fryer (65), Danny Tarpani, David Groenewald (67), Terry Harris (68), Guy Cash, Pater Reed and Bob Shaw (69). Friday March 3: Despite fierce westerly winds, all of 49 players turned out for Friday’s KGB two-to-count Stableford alliance. They were drawn into 10 four-balls and three three-balls. Mark Warren, Heinz Czepluch and Neil Loundar shrugged off the conditions to card a creditable 85 + 5 = 90 points to win the competition. Runners up Dave Kirk, Andy Manson and Peter Longhurst were two off the pace on 83 + 5 = 88 points. There was a battle at the other end of the table to see who would come bottom, a position finally filled by Hamer en Sukkel holders Roy de Wet, John Dell, Vince Lockwood and Cecil Grobler. There were no two-clubs on the day. The best nett scores of the morning included Mark Warren (66), Peter Longhurst (67) and Johny Johnston (69).
