Uitenhage police recover goods taken in hijacking near Port Alfred

- LOUISE CARTER

LAST week on Wednesday at about 8.30pm, a Nissan truck with a trailer transporting groceries destined for East London was allegedly hijacked just outside Port Alfred by six armed men.

According to the SAPS, one of the suspects took control of the truck and drove towards Hankey in Humansdorp.

The driver of the truck was dropped off in Despatch by the other suspects. The cargo (groceries) on the truck was off-loaded at a home in Splinter Street, Hankey, before the suspects drove with the truck towards Port Elizabeth where they abandoned it in Rocklands, Uitenhage at around 1am last Thursday morning.

Police in Uitenhage recovered the truck and all the necessary roleplayers were activated.

Hankey police and the Port Elizabeth hijacking task team recovered the truck’s cargo valued at R750 000 at the address in Hankey.

Detectives are following up on leads and arrests are imminent.

Cases of hijacking and possession of suspected stolen goods are under investigation.
