Donaghy rules the waves

- JON HOUZET

LOCAL evergreen ripper Andrew Donaghy once again ruled the waves in the East Beach Easter Surf Classic last weekend, winning the open section of the competition – one of several sporting events tying in to the Royal St Andrews Hotel Easter Festival.

“Despite poor weather, the waves were big and rather wild on the opening day. Many guys struggled to get out to the back.

“It was a hard physical battle,” Kowie Boardriders Club (KBC) chairman Warwick Heny said.

“As expected, the surf calmed down for the finals on Sunday and good to excellent waves peeled down the sandbank, making for some good and radical surfing.”

There was a festive atmosphere on the shore, the parking lot choc-a-bloc with spectators, and the beach café doing steady business with coffee, breakfast rolls, hamburgers and cooldrinks.

Port Alfred Bowling and Croquet Club

IT WAS quiet at the club this past week, with not much to report.

The winners of the Radue Competition were John Bennett, Tony Versveld and Studley Clarke. Second, Third and Fourth places went to Linda Schoning, Colette Reid, Trevor Frost and their teams. Thanks, once again, Radue, for your continued support.

Members please check the notice board for upcoming competitions. Duties for the week: Tabs – Ron Orford and Helen Cowie, Bar - Roger and Sue Darkes,

Just down the beach, the rubber ducks were in action in a circuit race, and although some concerns were expressed by KBC announcer Mickey Witthuhn about surfers getting too close to the rubber ducks, or the rubber ducks being too close to the surfing, no harm was caused and there were no hard feelings.

Heny said Donaghy’s “stylish approach and Ironing – Martin Leonard.

Kenton Bowling Club

This was a short week with many of our members preparing to host family and friends for the Easter weekend. However, among all the domestic activities there was still time for some competitive bowling.

The Dias Trips Jackpot’s fourth round was held last Wednesday. Thirty-eight players entered for this popular monthly competition. The individual scores are accumulated through the year and the player with the highest major manoeuvres in the premier men’s [open] division saw him hold off young Alex van Rijswijck, of Port Elizabeth, who had dominated the semi-final with the highest scoring wave of the event”.

Donaghy took home the winner’s purse of R3 000, and cash prizes of R1 000, R500 and R250 went to second to fourth positions in the open section.

Heny won the over 40 aggregate score in November is announced the winner for the jackpot prize. The current frontrunners are Bill Bedford (65 points), Dave Sterling and Kate Beavis (on 60 points each).

Thursday was Kenton-Kowie and Bess Tweedie day. Our ladies’ side (two teams) managed to draw with the Kowie ladies. The year-to-date standing is 4 points each but Kenton still leads on shot profit. Our men’s side (four teams) also managed a draw with two sides winning their games and two sides losing. The Kenton men are still ahead in the division, his brother Richard the longboard division, Kye Macgregor the U16, Lily Heny the ladies, Anton Wiersma the kneelo and Sunny Hill the bodysurfing.

There was a R500 first prize for the winners of each of the other sections, and Billabong product prizes for other finalists.

“The hosts, KBC, wish to thank the organisers and the main sponsor, Royal St Andrews Hotel, as well as Billabong and Shaka Surf School for investing in surfing and the other water sports!

“Not only did local surfers earn great prizes, but the club benefits financially too.

“This allows us to grow our own events and encourage healthy lifestyle living,” Heny said. Full results:
