BOWLSBANTER

- ... what’s happening

OUR two ladies’ teams returned from the All Cape which was held in a beautiful part of the country between Plettenburg Bay and Mossel Bay.

Congratulations to Jane Armitage and her team of Carol Grobbelaar, Sylvia Prevost and Adele Wood on playing in the first round of the Plate Event. Well done!

Our Monthly Radue Trips competition, played on Saturday April 29 was won by Dave Lang, Stan Weyer and Colin Barnard. Runners-up were Rosemary Wood, Hillary Allen and Mo Goff.

We wish our teams who will be playing in the Colleen Timm and Moore Shield at Kenton on Saturday May 13 good bowling. We also wish good bowling to those who are participating in the Eastern Areas (EA) Singles which will be played on May 6 and 7. Please check the notice board for venues and starting times.

A few of our ladies will take part in the Kowie Classic on May 10 and 11, and we wish Kowie a successful tournament.

A very successful Alan Wilson Croquet Tournament was held at our club last week and, by all accounts, was enjoyed by all who participated. Duties for the week May 9-13: Tabs – Norman Jordaan and Colette Reid, Bar - Trevor Frost and Graham Enslin, Ironing - Dave Lang. Another “short” week and not much excitement on the bowling front.

Our ladies returned from the Ladies’ All Cape in the Eden District with some good bowling stories. They managed a creditable fifth place in their section of 10.

That doesn’t tell the complete story though.

On points, they shared second place with three other clubs and only the shot profit moved them down to fifth place. In the process they managed to beat Sedgefield, the ultimate section winners.

Our men’s team left for the Men’s All Cape on Saturday.

By the time of going to press they had managed to win their first game. Follow their progress on our club’s web site at

Friday’s attendance draw wasn’t won and the jackpot now stands at R600. Be sure to attend the draw on Friday and the accompanying Nasi Goreng dinner at R35 per person.

Three of our members received their coaching certificates from Bowls South Africa this week. Gloria Schmidt, Di Gruneberg and Stompie Bellingan are now fully qualified. They are available to assist existing members in ironing out those little “nasties” that creep into ones’ bowling techniques, as well as instruct novices on how to play the game. Duties for the week May 8-14: Tabs – Rob Smith, Bar – Rule family. Events: Saturday May 6 – Social Saturday sponsored by Kenton Garden Services; EA Men’s Senior Singles; Sunday May 7 – EA Men’s Senior Singles.

Birthdays: May 5 – Rina Maree, May 9 – John Gaylard. Last Tuesday was the monthly competition sponsored by Kenny’s Sports Bar and we played a Megabucks format comp with Keith Kolesky’s team of Peter Ford, Rob Walker and Therese Viljoen defeating Mike Long’s team of fours with a full house 10 points and 11 shot profit.

Each member received a Kenny’s voucher. The runner-up in the competition was Rod Gradwell’s team who beat Sieggie Rohrs’s team with 9 points and 14 shot profit.

On Thursday, we played Snowball competition which had be won the previous week. With a very small kitty available the four ends were drawn and the score “3” was drawn. Mike Tomlinson’s team of Mike Pfotenhauer, Theresa Pretorius and Gerald Mills had the score for the four ends and shared a small kitty of R30-plus.

Our Club Mixed Trips competition final was played and Jacques Krige’s team of Lynn Kolesky and Margaret Stegmann were the winners over Keith Kolesky’s team by two points and 4-shot profit. Don Kelly organised the competition and presented the winners with their prize. Thank you, Don.

On Saturday, we again played the Snowball competition and this time the score for the four ends was “7” and none of the teams could match the score so the small kitty will be given a chance to grow. Our ladies’ team returned from the All Cape Tournament having ended in fourtth place in their section and just missing out on a place in the plate event.

On Monday, we had two men’s team head out for the Southern Cape to take part in the Men’s All Cape Competition we wish them good luck for the tournament.

On Saturday while we played bowls we had some affirmative shopping take place in our car park. We came off the green to find three vehicles had been broken into and one just damaged for spite by the look of things. Mainly clothing and personal effects were stolen and vehicle tools as well as a set of dark green bowls. So if anyone is approached to buy a second hand set of green Drakes Pride’s they come from the Kowie Bowls Club.

On Monday May 1, we had social bowls day starting at 10am, playing two short games worth 100 points each and followed at lunch time with a braai. We had a turnout of five rinks of trips and after game one the winner moved one rink up and played the second game. The fires were lit and the scores tallied up. Bob Ford and his team of PeeWee Tomlinson and Linda Reynolds were on top form winning their first game with 53 points and the second with 65 points for a total of 118 out of 200 points. The runner-up was Sieggie Rohrs’s team of Don Kelly and Peter Wansell with a score of 108 points. I think all who played had a good day with some late stayers.

Some All Cape results at end of day 2: Gavin Deenik’s team has lost three and won one with Stephen Minnaar’s team losing one and being the winners in three games. Well done guys. Duties for week May 8-14: Greens – (Roll) Ed Hoseck, (Mark) Neville Westcott and Trevor Lentz, Tabs – (Cash) Judy Hunter, Bar – Jacques Krige and Trevor Lentz.
